OK, here is the deal.  Every once in a while, after you've spent dozens of hours chasing the main story line, you click on that one random NPC with a "!" mark above them and it CHANGES YOUR LIFE.  i mean, you think, "Whoa... why wasn't this the main quest?  I would have paid to play 80 hours of THIS story!"

I want to hear about those quests.  Tell me what side quest sticks with you more than a main quest ever has.

For me, it is Witcher 3, The Warble of a Smitten Knight.  Basically it is the story of a man in love with a woman, but she has a secret.  Turns out that she was cursed (well, it was actually a wish gone wrong) and at night turns into a bird-woman, so she leads the player to a clearing in the woods in hopes that he will kill her.  The player is a freak, too, so she accepts his offer of help, but the cure for the curse leaves the woman with only a few years to live (the same life span as a bird that she is cursed to resemble).  Then, after she is healed, she rejects the man's love.  It's a really great story.

It must be true, I read it on the internet...

I loved when you walked into the village in the swamps and that string music comes on and you just know some evil shit is going down.. Then the 3 crones appear and the music intensifies... So good...

I remember that, it was top 10.  Strangely the crones never did it for me.  The concept was there, but I felt like they didn't have the development I was hope for.  They started off evil, and  they were always evil.  Never a moment where I wanted them to succeed or be forgiven.

Oh, the quest itself was nothing to shout about, but that atmosphere of dread and pure evil dripping from the music and the location... So good.  I can't remember most of the game now, although I've played it through 4 times, once with the DLCs.  Gonna go for a 5th time with the new 30 series GPUs and the upgraded version of the game releasing next year.

Yes, totally the atmosphere was perfect for that.  You know what else I really liked?  There was a game back on Playstation (original) called "Legend of Dragoon" that had a secret boss after you collected the full set of 50 stardust hidden through out the world (they were unmarked, you literally had to just press "X" against all the scenery in ever location to find them).  this boss had twice the health of the games final boss, no status bar, and said horrible things to you as you fought him.  Mostly things about how you would fail to save the world.  It nuts how the game developers created such a psychological battle that only a small percentage of players would ever encounter.
