I'm writing a paper on Descartes and I'm trying to recall what the idea/phrase/word is that says we cannot think of anything that is 100% new, with no attributes whatsoever that belong to something we have experienced.

That we cannot think of a completely original thought.

Genuine inspiration.

Was wondering if anybody knew what the word/phrase/idea for that original thought was called.

please, and thank you  :)

A point(s) or frame(s) of reference for a thought?

it's a bit of a loaded question, because you'd have to define original thought before giving a decisive answer.

The other half is that the mind must synthesize to create from existing knowledge, and not able to pull something out of nowhere. In the latter, I'm not sure there's a word or phrase for that, there probably is but this is almost akin to a phrase or word meaning "to turn a screwdriver" it's so basic and macro it's very hard to simplify.

I guess you could kind of say that all thoughts are based on empiricism?

In such case, the converse can also be true, where if an original thought was had, it would have to be converted into something unoriginal (a reference) to be expressed or put into a perspective, hence a frame of reference is necessary to transmit thought.

You could conclude in the mind there could be an original thought involving concepts entirely never thought of, but if it were there would be absolutely no reference points, so it technically doesn't exist outside of the mind and therefore doesn't exist beyond cogito; by extension and definition non-empirical.

This is mildly interesting, as a kid I remember realizing that many people have probably already thought what I thought, but I never bothered looking into it or saying anything. Funny how sometimes you know philosophy without being aware of it.

@Vitalius might be able to help you

apologizes in advanced if you are so tempted as to write paragraphs

The idea I was looking for actually turned out to be genuine inspiration, found it in the inception script and then edited it into the first post. :D

The movie does a great job of taking a few main parts of Descartes meditations and dumbing them down while maintaining the mysticism behind the words.

And yeah Descartes basically concludes that even if there were one with an imagination so superior that he can truly create entirely new ideas that the things used to express the idea (e.g paint, clay, atoms, etc)

ah, I edited a fair bit and summoned, but I guess that's of no use since you found what you were looking for  :P

Watch this:

the problem wasn't that I don't understand Descartes, which I'd say I do to a fair degree, but rather that I was looking for a  phrase which would help sum up what he said.

And I found what I was looking for at around the same time that 'helping' posted.

mvitkun

The idiom: "There is nothing new under the sun."

This is widely known because it's in the Bible.

Ecclesiastes 1:9 (NKJV),
That which has been is what will be,
That which is done is what will be done,
And there is nothing new under the sun.

Basically it means there can be no genuine inspiration (what you said) because everything you can think of exists already in some form before you thought of it. Such as the examples you gave:

And yeah Descartes basically concludes that even if there were one with an imagination so superior that he can truly create entirely new ideas that the things used to express the idea (e.g paint, clay, atoms, etc)

That's just what it makes me think of when you described it. It doesn't explicitly cover thoughts/imagination, but I think it's general enough to maybe do that.

Since you already found what you were looking for (and it apparently wasn't this), I figured you might want it or something for whatever you are doing. Might give you another reference.
