Synology DS220+ vs DS720+

Hey guys,

 

Once the new year hits I'm looking at getting a NAS setup for two things.

 

1. Basic photo/file backups for my household (2 people)

2. (and mostly) a Plex Server for all my media.

 

I was initially considering the DS220+, but I heard it's not exactly recommended for 4k Transcoding, so that's why I was considering the DS720+ (it's only $130 more).

 

My questions were:

1. Is this a better option?

2. I've done a little reading and it seems unrecommended to use non-NAS drives (i.e. WD Blue) drives in a NAS?

3. If it's primarily a media server, and all other files will likely also be backed up on another computer, is RAID 1 still recommended? Or should I just run without RAID for max storage?

 

EDIT:

Also would I notice a large difference between the Seagate 64mb 5900RPM drives vs their 256mb 7200RPM drives?

If u want 4K transcoding then i would recommend the DS720+.

 

I have a DS215j which i just use for storage so i can definately recommend Synology.
