wifi slowed down?

ok so i plugged in a gigibit wifi router today from tplink wifi speeds went from 35mbps to 3 mbps any reason. before i was just using the wifi that came with the rogers modem

Ok first of all your not going to get Gigabit via WiFi. Its just how things are. Secondly you need to know what Wireless Standard and band you are using. 2.4 Ghz is built for distance while 5Ghz is built for speed. Another thing to consider is that even if a router has Gigabit ports, doesn't mean it supports Gigabit Internet. Many cheaper routers have low end CPU's and as such they cant support faster speeds due to the limitations of how fast it can do NAT.

I just want to sit back and watch the world burn.

the router i got is the TP-Link AC1200 mesh im using 2.4ghz which is what i was using before while using my isp built in router. i plan on switching isp due to customer service issues. but the new planned isp well their modem doesnt have built in wifi so i want wifi. i only have 2 devices connected a labtop that has 2.4ghz and a apple iphone 11 pro max the apartment is 200 sq feet. and the router is connected via a 3ft cable that came with it. im about 2 ft from the router. im sure a wifi router can handle 30+mbps im wondering why it dropped from 30+mbps to 3mbps. im not trying to do 500mbps via wifi

2.4 Ghz is used by bluetooth, cordless phones, wireless gadgets, broadcasted by Microwave ovens. Its the most heavily used wireless spectrum ever. Any number of devices can cause interference. Plus 2.4 Ghz is build for distance not speed. You want speed you need to use 5Ghz.

Who knows. But the fact is you live in an Apartment, that means every WiFi network is competing with yours. There are limited channels that can be used. You could try changing the wireless channels, but the fact is 2.4 Ghz regardless is going to be slower. Especially if you have interference around. Id say you might be able to get a couple of hundred Mbps at most. I know Signal band Wireless N would do about 70 Mbps in most cases, your never going to get close to a Gigabit on 2.4 Ghz.

once again im not trying to get a gigabit on 2.4. im wondering why switching from my isp wifi to a router did it drop so far. there no more networks than before so speed should be the same. im well aware that 5ghz is faster but im not trying to get hundreds of mbps im trying to get 30 mbps just like i had before

Again eleventy billion devices use 2.4 Ghz. Your new router could be on a different wireless channel than the previous one. A neighbor could have bought a new device that operates on the band and its causing interference. The WiFi router you bought might not have as good as a radio or antennas. TP link is known for budget routers, not really high performance ones. ALSO technically speaking AC and AX standards are more 5Ghz standards than anything, There is also a possibility the 2.4 Ghz radio in your previous router was just built for more speed. Routers have different rated speeds on each band. Ive seen 2.4 Ghz speeds range from 300 Mbps to 900 Mbps on Wireless AC. There are just too many variables.

Not quite sure of the naming convention used in Canada, but is that a Deco device or just a simple AC1200 wireless router?

  1. What make and model of device does Rogers provide you with?
  2. Did you simply plug in the TP-Link router into the Rogers device without changing modes on any?
  3. Did you turn off the WiFi on the Rogers device after connecting the TP-Link router?

Please address the questions above so we can understand what's going on.

Furthermore, I believe you're missing @Donut417's point. The 5GHz band is faster, yes, but it also has more channels which means you're likely to get less interference using 5GHz versus 2.4GHz. I understand that 30Mbps is not even the theoretical maximum throughput on 2.4GHz, but you're more likely to get sustained 30Mbps on 5GHz rather than on 2.4GHz because of the many shortcomings of the latter. When you're living in an apartment complex with lots of other wireless networks, you should try to avoid using the 2.4GHz antenna if possible. Run WiFi Analyzer and post the screenshots of the 'Networks' and 'Analyze' tabs to see what's going on.

If your computer can only utilize 2.4GHz (which would mean that it's very old), I'd suggest investing in a good WiFi 5 or better wireless adapter. Then turn off the 2.4GHz radio completely or at least set it's power output to minimum. Your 200sqft apartment should get good coverage.

Yea I watched a few videos from ltt and then changed channels on the 2.4 now I’m getting 30+ mbps when I build my new pc I will switch to 5ghz because it will be only my cell phone using wifi then which is a iPhone 11 Pro Max I believe it has 5ghz but right now the Labtop only has 2.4 ghz so nothing I can do. The new desktop will be plugged in via Ethernet using a 3-6ft Ethernet cable
