Best Ampere card for 144hz 4k?

Currently on a 2070 non super and I decided to go all out and went ahead and got a 144hz 4k monitor from ASUS. If I really want to splurge and get a 3090, I could but it seems as though I would be able to get good performance in 4k from the 3080 for 600 dollars less. What concerns me is that the 3080 comes with only 10GB of Vram, less than the 2080 ti which came with 11gb. It seems like 4k AAA gaming takes a ton of Vram to run smoothly plus more Vram to enable DLSS and RTX. So, I am not exactly sure if 10GB is enough. Jensen claimed that the 3080 was the new "flagship" a distinction given to the 2080 ti in turing and the 1080 ti in pascal. So I am not sure if Nvidia will end up releasing a 3080 ti with more vram. Anyways, with the options we are about to have, What would be the best Ampere card for my display?

3080 seems like a good card for that. Can't go wrong with it.

If we're completely ignoring price, the 3090 is going to give you the best experience in 4K 144hz, especially if you're looking to use RTX and DLSS. But from a price-to-performance perspective, the 3080 is going to be a much better value. Even the Titan RTX couldn't hit 144hz at 4K in AAA titles like Battlefield 5, and that was with ray tracing turned off. That's not to say that your experience with a 3080 will be bad, but I doubt you'll be hitting that 144hz cap very often, especially with RTX on. As for VRAM, you're gonna need at least 8GB to run 4k smoothly, so 10GB actually sounds fine to me. The 24GB on the 3090 is going to be incredible overkill in that respect. What it really boils down to is: are you willing to pay over 2x the price for something that might only net you marginally better performance? If the answer is yes then no judgement, but if you ask me, it's not gonna be worth it.

 

This is all hearsay until benchmarks come out, of course. If the 3090 completely blows the 3080 out of the water at 4K, then go for it.

The 3090 is a beast, no doubt about it. It seems more like a Titan replacement than a gaming flagship. Nvidia wanted to merge the users who do professional work with gamers who have extremely deep wallets and want the best of the best. The way I see it, the 3080 seems like its a better value because you still get the decent performance in 4k for 600 dollars less and like you said only marginal performance difference.

What games do you play? A 2080 Ti can handle most games at 4k with 144 fps (but prone to drops). This is with 11GB, so with the increased performance and faster GDDR6X memory, you should be fine with a 3080.

Mostly RPG games like red dead online, Witcher 3, GTA online, sometimes I will play fortnite, I will def be playing Cyberpunk when it comes out. I dont do esports or anything like that

If you're looking for 144Hz @ 4k, you might actually need that 3090. Especially if you're wanting to run something like RDR2, FS2020, or anything current w/ RTX on, and maybe in addition to Resolution Scaling.

If the numbers are to be believed (wait for reviews), the 3080 is about 50% more powerful then the 2080 Ti. So a 3080 should be capable of handling most games 4k at 120. But it's likely there'll still be improvements to be seen with a 3090.
