so i signed up because i got a lot of suggestions to use a vpn, i am currently living in canada with cogeco 120mbps internet, but when i connected to the vpn and run speedtest i drop from 120mbps to like 50mbps on the same toronto server that i normally pick.

is it normal to lose that much speed? :S

Yes,

Think about it, you are probably sharing the bandwidth of that VPN server with several others.

And most likely that VPN server is on the other side of the world, then it has to get back to where you are from

so

From your home --> VPN (other side of world) --> speedtest to server near you (again From VPN's point of view - other side of the world)  .. multiply that by 2 because traffic has to go back and forth..

Go figure?

so you're saying that i connect to their Canadian server, then it goes across the world, then back again, then to speedtest?

No.

It goes to the VPN server and then to the destination.

Why not set up your own VPN server? You can get a VPS for a few £/$ per month.

it doesnt make sense that my connection is dropping by half then, because their canadian server is literally an hour drive away o.0

The network infrustructure between you and the server will govern the performance of your connection between the server and your ISP. Although distance is a factor, isnt as simple as it being close, so should give good performance.

Using a VPN will allways give you slower speed because of the additional protocol overhead.

It would depend. Why do you use a local - (from around where you live i mean) VPN ?

Most people from outside the usa for example use an VPN in the USA to access content they can only see with an USA IP (netflix / streaming for example)

In my example the VPN server is on the other end of the world yes. (maybe yours isn't how do I know, u didnt tell us :P )

That is besides the point

If I were a VPN provider, I would cap bandwidth to my VPN users as well, so I can have more users on one server at the same time.

While giving all of my users an equal user-experience.

Maybe look for a specific VPN provider that says it can give you xxx bandwidth guaranteed? (you are most likely are going to have to pay more for that tough!)
