ZFS help

Good idea... Just need a few more thumb drives... going to get some tomorrow morning I guess... Other than that, any more suggestions?

Either FreeNAS or ZFSonLinux will be able to re-import the "pool" (not really a pool with one drive) and be able to read it.

I don't really know how I should phrase this, nor in which section should I post this thread since this will look completely out of place and make me look like a complete idiot. (Perhaps I am)

So, I deceided a few months ago that I should install freenas on a spare pc I had lying around. And so, I have the hard disk, a 4TB WD My Passport, since it was kindda experimental, attached to it.  Because I didn't want to erase MacOS from that Mac, I had freenas running on a spare USB thumb drive that I had lying around (Not sure if this will help, but it was a 16GB Kingston Datatraveler 4h gen)

Long story short, that USB stick isn't with me any more.

Soooo... Are there any ways of getting my data back from that WD drive rocking ZFS, other than reinstalling Freenas on another poor little usb stick?

Or are there software for windows (I haven't built up my confidence in Linux yet) that will allow me to recover my data?

As far as I am concerned, I didn't choose to encrypt my drive...

The IIA rule applies here:

I'm mostly speaking from experience so what I say may not work

I may be a complete asshole in some threads but I swear that I won't lie

Anyways, I am always glad to help

Linux (ubuntu) I believe has ZFS built in now? So it would be able to import the pool.

But... why not just use freenas on a flashdrive again? Certainly the easiest way to get at the data IMO.

  • 2 weeks later...

Thanks Guys for all the help! I have recovered everything using a tool called Klennet UFS recovery tool (which also does ZFS, which is strange, but I'll take it)
