hello I have a question about CPU temps past 2 days I had the computer shut off while I was working the usual googling told me that it's either the PSU or CPU since this happened while under stress I'm more inclined to blame the CPU temp since I know my cooler is a bad I'm in the process of looking for a new one it just hard to find things these days and I don't have access to online stores

anyway my question is, when a CPU jump to 100 in about 5-10 seconds is that the fault of cooler only could or can the CPU be bad somehow?

right know it idles around 47-50c room temp is air conditioned to 20c and like I said under load it will jump to 100 real fast oh and I'm using AIDA64 for readings

CPU:i5 9600K no overclock (no faith in the cooler)

Cooler:some shitty old cooler master that will not sit on the CPU fully no matter what, i think it's the hyper 212X(bought it in 2013) I'm not sure I just know it's bad and I want to throw it in the trash ASAP

PSU: Silverstone ST75F-PT

If the system is starting up normally, and is not overclocked, it is not the fault of the CPU. Both Intel and AMD CPU's have power limits in place, which make it so they can only dissipate so much heat. This is your cooler.

it would, just have issues

read the cooler's manual (google it if you lost it)

and make sure you installed it correctly

-sigh- feeling like I'm being too negative lately

I really hope you are right the thing that keep bothering me is when the computer shut off it immediately tried to power back up and than stopped which is why I'm fearing the PSU might have a problem and I don't have a multi meter or even know how to use one to test that

man hardware problems are the worst and a giant guess which part it is ☹️

the cooler won't sit properly it has been the bane of my setup for years it's just badly designed that's why I finally had it and throwing it away BTW what do you think of the corsair A500 ?

A bad cooler can totally cause this. If you let it sit for an hour and it starts up fine, then it's pretty much sure to be the cooler.

garbage for the price

get a dark rock (pro) 4 or a NH-D15

just make sure your case fits it

well see what I find like I said I don't have access to amazon or anything like it so I'm stuck with local stores and they don't always have the expensive stuff because few people buy them also covid.

I have the Corsair Carbide Series 275R case it's a mid tower and I think it fits everything right?

google the case's spec, check the CPU Cooler clearance, and check the actual height of the cpu cooler that you intend on buying

Humorously, in the recent tech support challenge LMT did, Jay neglected to realize there was no thermal paste, and yet still managed to overclock and beat the benchmark scores. It was running hotter than the fires of hades, but the CPU will still work, at least until it melts.

There's your problem. The fit must be tight. A CPU is built to withstand 50 lbs of pressure specifically so the cooler fit can be very tight. The whole point of thermal paste is that even microscopic grooves in the IHS or cooler heatsink can be enough to severely diminish the transfer of heat: the thermal paste serves to fill in these microscopic grooves.

If the cooler is just hanging loose, then yeah, your temps are going to be bad.

Oh yeah I did see that lol it was insane that Jay managed to pull of the benchmark

I'm glad that everyone is agreeing with me that it's the Cooler and not the PSU my wallet can't handle two punches right now 😅😅

Ok so the case is 170mm and the thic boys are all at 165mm except the a500 which is 170mm does that mean it will fit or will it scrape the glass?

might fit, depending if the case manufacturer actually leaves some leeway in the number

iirc you can remove the top plate off the A500 to lower its height(?)

honestly if your cooler have been causing issues, why did you not RMA it while it was still new?

i recommend you look into mounting it properly before spending money, unless something is broken then that cant be helped

lol I wish we don't have the luxury or warranty here(I live in Iraq) and I just made due with it it was working fine for years it worked through 2 CPUS maybe it's so old that it no longer conduct heat and like I said it never fully sits on the CPU which was annoying right up until now it got unclamped when I moved the case 2 days ago I did put it back but my guess it's not fully connecting with the CPU I was just worried that maybe some other thing might cause the crash but since everyone here is sure that it's only the cooler I'm a little bit at ease now I'll find out soon enough I guess 😅
