there is a video that starts an animation of a design for a bee hive (I know this isnt tech related), but I am interested in what program or software allows you to build the parts, and have them build themselves as that animation shows.

It's done in Sketchup:

 

The model was created in the program, out of a couple different parts and with relatively simple "move from x to y in z amount of frames" an animation can be created, recorded, turned into a gif and posted where-ever.
