Greetings! I'm new to the forums, but not to building a rig. BUT! It has been quite a few years since my last build and I've lost track of what's good, what's bad, and what goes with what. 馃槈

I'd very much appreciate any thoughts the experts here have on the following upgrade.

Budget (including currency):

Plenty (but not insane) CAD

Country:

Canada

Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for:

Some light CAD (Fusion 360), light video editing (Pinnacle Studio) and gaming, mostly simulators (Train Sim World 2020, Cities Skylines (with some heavy mods/assets) and Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020)

Other details:聽

Current system:

  • Windows 10 Pro 64-bit
  • Intel Core i7 4790K
  • G Skill 32GB (4 x 8GB) Dual-Channel DDR3-2134
  • ASUS Z97-A Motherboard
  • LG ULTRAWIDE (3440x1440)
  • NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 Ti (ZOTAC International)
  • 500GB Samsung SSD 860 EVO (SATA (SSD)) (Boot drive)
  • 250GB ADATA SX900 (SATA (SSD))
  • 5589GB Intel Raid 0 Volume (3 x 2TB SATA HDD)
  • 7451GB Hitachi HzW RAID 0 external USB 3.0 Device (2 x 4TB SATA HDD)

Not sure what PSU I have at the moment, but it is getting quite old.

Obviously, I'll be keeping the 2080 TI.馃槈聽I'll also be keeping the case (CoolerMaster HAF).

As for storage, I'd like to add a 500GB聽NVMe SSD to replace the old 250GB SATA SSD, which has my games and a few other things on it, and it will become the boot drive. Games and stuff will move to the 500GB Sata SSD. The HDD's will remain as is (yes, I know I will have to redo the Intel Raid 0 volume). The Hitachi Raid 0 volume is my external backup drive.

As I mostly game with simulators, high refresh rates are not a priority so will also be keeping the LG ultrawide.

I'm partial to Intel CPU's on ASUS motherboards.

Here's the list of hardware that I'm considering upgrading to:

  • Intel Core i9-10920X 3.5 GHz 12-Core
  • Noctua NH-D15S 82.52 CFM CPU Cooler
  • Asus PRIME X299-A ATX LGA2066 Motherboard
  • Corsair Vengeance RGB Pro 64 GB (4 x 16 GB) DDR4-3000 CL15 Memory聽聽 聽
  • Gigabyte AORUS 500 GB M.2-2280 NVME Solid State Drive
  • EVGA G5 1000 W 80+ Gold Certified Fully Modular ATX Power Supply

Anyone see any issues with this upgrade?

Much thanks,

...jim

I see loads of issues.

That Intel platform really isn't worth the money. I'm not the biggest AMD fan, but when you go up to that level of stuff you're better off looking elsewhere.

I'd get a bigger SSD. The games you're playing are going to take up a ton of space.

Any reason you're getting a PSU that powerful?

Thanks for the comments gents.

As I mentioned initially, funds are not of much concern.

I've been doing a bit more research (and have received comments from elsewhere).聽

Here's the new upgrade list:

  • Intel Core i9-10900K 10-Core 20-Thread Unlocked
  • Noctua NH-D15S 82.52 CFM CPU Cooler
  • ASUS Prime Z490-A LGA 1200
  • Corsair聽Vengeance RGB Pro聽64GB (4x16GB) DDR4 3600MHz CL18Memory聽聽 聽
  • Samsung聽970 EVO Plus M.2 NVMe PCI-E 1TB SSD
  • EVGA G5 1000 W 80+ Gold Certified Fully Modular ATX Power Supply

As for the PSU, it's more for future proofing. I do plan to upgrade the 2080 TI once the 30xx's are out.

Might even leave it in the system and crypto mine with it. It's currently earning about $100 CAD per month. $80.00 CAD after electrical cost. But that's not the main purpose of the rig. I have a mining rig for that, currently earning $375 CAD a month. $300 CAD after electrical cost. ROI on that was done six months ago.
