I recently upgraded from my 4790K / Maximus VII setup to a new Ryzen setup due to the 4790K seemingly having some issues with my 2400 MHz RAM. I was considering using the 4790K setup as an upgrade for my Plex server, but in doing some further testing / benchmarking I noticed that when the system is under load, there is a huge temperature spread across the four cores. I've included the picture I took of the temps and voltages right before a blue screen due to a watchdog error. This was while running a Cinebench benchmark. I tried a new thermal paste application and even a different cooler (from an Corsair H100I to a Cooler Master T2), but I got basically identical results both times. I had hyper-threading off while using this setup for my gaming rig, but I reset the BIOS (re-enabling hyper-threading in the process) in between setups. Turning off hyper-threading means the max temp peaks around 80, with the lowest core around 65, and there is no blue screen. The voltages in that case are all even at 1.246ish.

This is mostly just a curiosity since my Plex setup is already more than adequate for my usage, but I'm totally stumped by this one. Any ideas?

It's running way too hot.

Is the cooler securely mounted? It's not loose or something?

H100 should cool that chip at stock, something seems wrong here.

Yeah that's what I thought too. I re-mounted it and even tried another cooler, but I got the same results.

if core temps are way different, it's probably the TIM under the IHS

4790k is old, so i wouldnt be surprised if it's gone bad

-sigh- feeling like I'm being too negative lately

Makes sense. I had wondered that, but wasn't sure if that was a thing that could actually happen.

Kind of looks like a bad sensor or two, I really cant imagine different parts of the package being that different.

^ this, if you're not keen on upgrading, dont touch it

it is bad for the cpu to run that hot, but it's more risky to delid it unless you have proper tools to do it

One thing is for sure, blue screens from overheating is gonna kill the OS first, then take out the cpu later.

Watch a bunch of tutorials. Super easy to delid that chip. The only tool you need is a razor blade. Some people would do them in a vice. That's where the die mate tool idea came from probably.

Need any pointers, feel free to ask. I've done a couple of chips here and there. Mostly soldered ones though....

Yeah, luckily I already upgraded my main rig, and my Plex server is still good with the hardware it has, so I might try delidding it, especially since I'm sure it's not worth anything as it sits.

Good to know. I'll look into it some and try it. Worst comes to worse, it's already close to dead as it is lol. I appreciate the offer for help, I'll see what I can find and let you know if I need any pointers. Also I was trying all of this on a throwaway Windows install, so no worries there.
