Corsair VS550 issue

lankeyphil

Greetings all.

I am having an odd issue I've not come across before.

Today I went into the office and found my pc lit up and running but not posted. Just electrically running.

So I hit the power button and note fan tune changes fans dip and controls kick in and pc boots up no problems and runs fine.

Wattman tells me power issues and restored settings.

Thought to myself "oh weird glitch ill turn it off."

Shut down in the proper fashion and low and behold back to where we started, PC is off but all still being powered.

Thinking thats not good I switch the mains off no problems.

I've checked the 24v rail

Wiped bios

Changed power settings in Windows for fast boot etc.

All to no avail So I moved on to physical checks.

Pulled the VS550 out the computer completely disconnecting it and away into another room and plugged it in to the wall.

low and behold without help turns itself on and spins up whilst disconnected with no buttons to power it up and no help from a paperclip.

So it would appear its supplying power permanently with no way to turn it off.

Stupid thing is only 4 months old.

Time to replace?

OK dokey did wonder if that would be the case.

Anyone know whats happened to it or experienced this out of curiosity?

Normally they just blow up, grateful that it didn't!

It's a low quality unit anything happens with those. I've had this before with other crappy supplies that either turn on the computer when they get power or just run for no reason.

The warranty is 3 years, make sure you don't remove the stickers.

A used corsair with warranty will be a quick sell.

That's really odd.  Never seen a PSU start up without even having the power on signal.

Is this the newer VS with the gray scale side labels?

Yes indeed new one

Swapped kettle leads as well.

Just as soon as you put a kettle lead in and flick the switch to on the psu kicks into life with no prompt.

Stuck permanently on, got to be a short somewhere I guess?

To update.

New PSU went in today and all fully back to working order.

No idea what the VS550 has done to itself.

Be warned other users of this range. If it happens to you get it out ASAP.

I wouldn't use your example as a reason not to get a VS550.  They've literally sold hundreds of thousands of them and this is the first time I've heard of this.
