GTX 1080 replacement

ArchibaldTuttle

Unfortunately my EVGA GTX 1080 FTW blew a capacitor (or two?) over the weekend. I've been holding off on putting together a new system for the GeForce RTX 3000 series, so hopefully by the end of the year I can get that done. In the meantime, what's are the cheapest options to give me similar performance as the 1080? I only game in 4K, so that's a big consideration (and also why I need to upgrade my whole system ASAP). I'm running an i7 6700k and a MSI Z170A. I'm not nearly into computers these days as I was years ago, so I appreciate the help.

Also is there anything I can do with the 1080? I haven't opened it up yet, but by the pops and smell it's most certainly blow capacitor(s).

snag a 5600xt or 5700, those should get you close. if you can utilize dlss 2.0 in your games maybe get a 2060

i'd toss an email to evga and see if theyll help you out, cant hurt and theres a nonzero chance that theyll be feeling generous and repair/replace it even if its out of warranty

Depending on your location, internet speed, and availability you might be able to use Shadow Tech. Its basically a VM rental for gaming and you can get a whole system with the equivalent of a 1080 for $12 a month. Biggest thing to look out for is ping, if its to high then there will be a lag between moving your mouse and seeing your game react. Could be a decent stopgap for a few months. Linus has covered them a couple of times now.
