3700x Temperature Question

Hi all!

 

Earlier this week, I finally got around to making my first build! I'm pretty happy with how it turned out, and have been using it for the past couple of days. Unsure if relevant, but the part list is here.

 

For CPU cooling, I decided to stick to the 3700x's stock cooler. When I first tested the build, I used the onboard thermal pad. I then had to transport it, so I took everything apart and cleaned the thermal paste on both the cooler and the CPU with IPA (Isopropyl Alcohol). When I reassembled the build, I used some IC Diamond 7 Carat Thermal Compound. Case cooling is the 3 fans that came with the case as intakes and the 3 RGB fans I bought as exhausts (case thermals reach equilibrium around 40C). 

 

Now, to make sure my cooling was good, I used HWinfo64 to monitor. I logged the results, and saw that the CPU temps where hovering between 70 and 80, commonly reaching mid 90s. I was doing some light programming and I played a bit of Fortnite during the time of logging. The thermals and clocks are in the graphs below. As a sanity check, I ran the logging a total of three times, all with similar results. 

 

AFAIK, this behavior is not normal. Any ideas what could be causing such a hot CPU? Right now, with a few browser tabs open, it's around 70C. The return policy for the CPU is valid for one more week, should I consider exchanging it?

anything around 85/90c plus will probably result in your cpu throttling. 

ambient temps? and use a stress test like cinebench r20 and monitor thermals with either hwinfo or ryzen master, as others can't do it correctly. 

also try reseating the cooler and re applying thermal paste.

I have the PC in a room at 26C (AC-controlled). I just ran Cinebench R20. I am attaching the temps leading up to and including it (the two red lines are start and end, system was mostly idling before that). I got a CPU score of 4411. 

 

I'll try reseating and repasting. Is it normal to reach 95C during Cinebench?

it isn normal yes. atleast with bad airflow cases.

 

i get around 5k points on my 3700x with cinebench r20.

 

what exact case is this?

only use hwinfo64 or ryzen master to monitor temps for ryzen as others can't do it accurately. 

95c is on the higher side of things. try re pasting and re seating the cooler. 

also airflow? try opening the side panel for the case, and if there's a huge temp difference, then the case airflow is likely bad.

I have the Maingear Vybe (Amazon Listing here). It's interesting because the sales rep at Micro Center specifically said it was a case with good airflow. I'll update later after repasting and reseating + testing with the open side panel.

@TofuHaroto @SavageNeo Thank you all for all the help. I immediately saw the issue when I tried to take the cooler off for reseating. I first assembled my build at 3 AM, and must have forgotten to clamp down the safety arm for the cooler. When I opened it up, the cooler was not making full contact with the processor.

 

I repasted/reseated and tested repeatedly over the weekend, and got up to 4700 points in R20 (all CPU defaults, will OC later), with temps under 75C. 

 

Will chalk it up to noob behavior in my first build! Thanks y'all!
