Quad Channel Question

Hi,

 

I have an Asus Prime X299-A motherboard, which supports quad channel DDR4.  I have 4 x 4GB TridentZ @ 3200MHz running full speed at quad channel.  My question:

- I want to add 4x4GB more to the remaining four slots. I am having a hard time finding the same set of RAM online.  What would happen if I added a different model that is also rated at 3200mhz?

It'll probably be ok, but can never say 100% for sure. Try to get similar or same timings if possible. I'm running 8x8GB (but same sticks) in my X299 system.

It will work, but do you really want that much jankyness? Ram is quite finnicky sometimes and might not really work

PSA: No, I didn't waste all that money on computers, (except the main one) my server cost $40, the intel NUC was my old PC (although then it had 8GB of ram, I gave the bigger stick of ram to a person who really needed it), my laptop is used and the second PC is really cheap.

I like tinkering with computers and have a personal hatred towards phones and everything they represent (I daily drive an iPhone 7, or a 6, depends on which one works that day)

So why look at the upgrade at all then? Best done when there is a need, and not just "because you can". (says the person running 64GB on a gaming system because I can, not because I need it...)
