Laptop losing gpu clock speed

When playing any demanding game on my laptop the clock speeds drop to around 200 and I drop to low fps this is a Windows 8 laptop quite old with and GTX 850M, anyone have any ideas what could be causing this and any soulutions to fixing it?

It gets to about 80-85 underload then the clock speeds drop

While I'm not familar with NVIDIA Maxwell GPU's, I can say that my GTX 780 throttles at 80°C. It may be time to give the laptop a good cleaning at the heatsink.

This has been done and thermal paste changed but it's still happening its just odd because it just randomly started

Yes its plugged in

are the screws tight enough? did u clean previous paste before applying new ones?

Paste was cleaned before and I've had the laptop open after this started and it made sure everyting was good and plugged in

you could try to DDU and re-install the drivers

 

but the symptoms is overheating, so something is probably wrong with the cooler assembly

Well I  will have another look at the coller assembly and see if anything can be changed
