Not sure if this is ment for networking or servers and NAS please move it or let me know if its the wrong area. Anyways I got a pc that I turned into a media pc with a Samba share. It works perfectly fine when its placed on the internal drive but whenever I move the share to an external (usb 3tb) drive it will allow all connections to see the files but don't allow me to move or play a file from it. All files are folders and their all 0 bytes. The drives permissions are set to me the user and others all of which can read and write to the drive. I can swap between the two and never have issues. I have checked and the files are there and play just fine off the pc that's physically connected but not to users over the network. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Note:

Using Linux mint 20 fully updated with the most recent version of samba.

Internal drive is connected via sata and external is connected via usb 3.0.

Samba works with the internal even after switching between the two connections in the smb.conf. It works perfectly internal but doesn't work besides seeing files names when its external.

imo you'd better install debian and use openmediavault its easy to setup and does not have such problems

You're probably right. How well does it work when it comes to streaming stuff? Like to a samsung tv does it act more like a media drive or network share? I did finally get it working which is nice but you're right it seems to be tricky when it comes to permissions and such.

ISSUE IS SOLVED. Anyone whos looking at this post with a similar issue should know I wiped my drive and then reformatted it. Then I gave myself permission via sudo chown user:user drivelocation -R. Then I configured smb.conf to add a secondary share (which I believe is were I messed up I might have not had the folder names correct) but regardless that's what I did. So I did the same thing I did the first time except this time it worked lol.

Last night right after I posted that I went ahead and just did that. Threw it in a VM and attached the usb device to it and just let it do its thing. Everything is working great (slightly slower speeds 70MBs vs 75MBs but honestly ease of use is worth it). Thanks for the recommendation.

To be fair, Linux Mint is Ubuntu based, which is debian based. OP could've just installed OMV within Mint ;)

Interesting. I have an Ubuntu Server 2018 machine that also has an external disk attached mounted through fstab on bootup and it works fine. No OMV though, just bare Samba.

I tested it on straight mint and it was giving me unmet requirements yada yada. It would be nicer to have it on the actual system (less resources divided out) but in a vm is fine as well. Linux Mint couldn't find the dependencies so im sure it would work on Ubuntu it just would need some extra work (or maybe ubuntu server 2018 has the stuff it needs and Linux Mint removed them).

Sounds like there's a repo problem as the samba packages have been a part of many Linux distros for many years.

im talking about open media vault not samba.

Ah ok. Yeah, I don't use OMV. I use bare Samba as my main storage solution is a Synology NAS and all Samba needs to do is serve as a place to dump my video files for Plex haha.
