I am looking for a good motherboard to overclock 10700k

I am looking for a good motherboard to overclock the 10700k. I have considered the Asus ROG Strix z490e, and the MSI MEG Z490 Unify. I want to know if there are better, or similarly performing cheaper options for under $300, United States.

Or, would I be better off overclocking a 9700k.

i would get the 3700x or 3800XT from AMD. 

10700k is better at games but it uses much more power, heats a lot more and is not as good as 3700x is workloads due to high thremals.

 

with 3700x you can go with cheap aftermarket cooler and entry level b550/x570 board and you will be fine.

but with 10700k you need expensive cooling and mothertboard (even more expensive if overcloking). with the cost of 10700k and it's platform you can get AMD ryzen 9 3900X/XT and it's platform

You'll definitely be able to overclock the 9700K better than the 10700K, but whether that will actually equate to better performance is another question. From what I've seen, the 10th gen chips don't tend to OC well any more. They're just too optimized already.

Honestly, the 10700K is not worth it. If you need strong multicore performance, the 3900X is much better for less money. It also uses less power and runs cooler. I'd you want to game, the 3600 is all you need.

 

The only time a 10th gen CPU makes sense is I'd you want to play Fortnite at 720p low settings. Then you buy a 10600K

I'm actually looking to play Fortnite at 1080p, competitive settings with an RTX 2080(the CPU will always be the bottleneck in this situation). I think going with at least 8 cores will be best for performance. I'll just get a 9700k, and OC it as much as I can with the Asus ROG Strix Z390e.

The 9700K is a horrible idea. It's on a dead platform with no support and only has 8 threads. It's not going to be a good investment.

 

With a 2080 non Super/Ti the CPU won't matter. Get a 3700X and tune the memory. It will run MUCH cooler than any i7 while using half the power so it won't turn your room into the surface of the sun while playing. I'd you want to play at 720p low for 600 FPS, get the 10600K and save yourself the trouble and headaches of the Infernal i7s
