hdd or ssd

Go to solution Solved by suedseefrucht,

If you need it for games, an SSD will be the better choice because loading the games will be a lot faster.

Which kind of SSD you choose, is almost not noticable for gaming. So make it depending on if your motherboad has an M.2 slot or if there is enough space in your case.

I would ask what the storage drive is for before making any suggestions.  Is it like a one drive for everything situation, or is the drive specifically for data storage that you infrequently use, like saved videos, pictures, etc.?

If you need a lot of space, definitely go with the HDDs, much cheaper for larger spaces. Especially for data that you infrequently access, they are great. :)

I use a M.2 SSD (NVMe) for my operating system, games, programs and everything which needs to be fast.

I also use a large SATA HDD for archiving pictures and videos because it can store more data for the same price and I dont need a high speed to look at pictures.

My build:

CPU

Intel Core i7 9700 8x 3.00GHz So.1151

CPU cooler

be quiet! Shadow Rock Slim

Motherboard

MSI B360-A PRO Intel B360 So.1151 Dual Channel DDR4 ATX

RAM

16GB (4x 4096MB) HyperX FURY black DDR4-2666

GPU

8GB Gigabyte GeForce RTX2070 WindForce 2X 3xDP/HDMI

SSD

500GB Samsung 970 Evo Plus M.2 2280

HDD

4000GB WD Red WD40EFRX Intellipower 64MB 3.5" (8.9cm) SATA 6Gb/s

Power Supply

bequiet! Straight Power 750W Platinum

Case

Fractal Design Define R6
3x bequiet! Silent Wings 3 PWM

If there is enough space on your SSD for your games, programs and OS, you don't really need another SSD.

What would you put on the new additional drive?

If it's just pictures, videos, or other things which don't need to be loaded really fast, then HDD is the cheaper solution.

I would agree with @suedseefrucht here.  NVMe is nice but not necessary, and you can get a higher capacity SATA SSD cheaper than a higher capacity NVMe drive usually.  Considering how much loading's done from the drive for games, definitely go for the SSD at least.
