So, a lot of people have this problem including myself and problem is....., well we don't know what exactly the problem is. I'll explain, so when I play games like battlefield 3 and 4 or even other games my gpu usage seems to be low at around 50-60% and gives me around 60-ish average fps with dips into 30's and 40's and If I crank up the details the gpu usage seems to go high but the fps still stays in the same range. I've had this problem for months now and i've probably looked through every related thread to it and there's no solution to it. The thing I found common on all these threads were, that this problem existed on amd cards, i don't think that if amd cards have a power saving will give you around 60 fps. My specs are below, and no it's not a cpu bottleneck, because many people with the same config are running the game just fine. And i'm using a single card for now and cpu at stock speeds. I've tried common things like unparking cores, setting prority to low, and still nothing.

Now, with many people I was thinking mantle will come to our rescue and even though the frames are pretty good with mantle the problem is still there as i lower the details the gpu usage go down and with cranking up the details the gpu usage seems to go up.

I'm using msi afterburner to monitor and i was doubting that maybe it can be culprit the here. But i've tried uninstalling it and still nothing.

Important Note: No forum has been able to pinpoint that what's the issue.

Check if you have V-sync on :D.

on a side note, I have a similar CF set up, and I have the same "low" gpu usage, but FPS go way higher I have to limit it to 60 with V.sync because of the screen tearing.

V-sync is off.

I just fired up BF3

1080p

ALL ultra

v-sync off

motion blur off (i dont like motion blur)

multiplayer 40 people or so

GPU usage where 71% gpu 1

                             76% gpu 2

min fps where around 76

avg 85

max 110

my FX-8350 is at stock clocks, and I see that your CPU is OC at 5.5Ghz, so i have to ask what are you cooling it with? is it a custom loop? what is your max temp, because it may be throttling, when the cpu reaches 60c or 62c it starts to cycle down clock every module (2 cores) to keep temps down.

Another thing is

Check GPU-z and see if the 2nd card has its 384bit bus width active, if it says 32bit (like mine did) you have to manually disable ULPS (ultra low power saving or something like that) from the registry.

That thing affects crossfire in a negative way, THAT may be your problem, and I just remembered it.

I said that i was using a single card for now and cpu at stock speeds above. Just fired up Far Cry 3, same approx70% and crappy fps dropping to 40's on ultra on single card, also when i look at the sky the gpu usage goes high upto 97%.

Ok, sorry for the late reply, I'll use a single card the r9 280x from gigabyte, and re-run my test.

will post info later, because honestly I don't know whats wrong with your PC.

Thanks!

Hi!, I started my test yesterday and my PSU blew up xD (by the sound it made I think the fuse died), luckily I had one lying around, and I just put my PC back together.

Will post results later.

PD: so far everything is working just fine.

K just got back from testing.

Same settings as before, but 1 gpu the r9 280x from gigabyte @stock

99% GPU usage

the lowest FPS I saw was 60 (it got this low once)

but during gameplay, aka running around explosions while shooting in multiplayer

FPS stayed around  top 70s to low 90s FPS, it hovered around there.

max FPS was 153 but 110ish were displayed more often (it went beyond this but on sectors with little stuff to render and no action,so I didn't count them.)

This was done with the "amd_catalyst_14.1_betav1.6" its not the latest beta driver, because I saw somewhere that it had problems with BF.

Try disabling the ULPS even if you are using 1 card, and disable "AMD Overdrive" from catalyst control center.

ALso re-install your drivers if you haven't done so already, even if the only thing you did was unplug the 2nd card, I found the hard way that even doing that requires re-install (drivers), for the GPU to work at a 100%.

ya I think i'm gonna buy a seperate SSD and install games on it and see if it works, but I doubt it will, a lot of people are having the same issue, you'll find a ton of unsolved threads regarding low gpu usage with frostbite engine. And apparently DICE doesn't wanna do anything about it, coz the there a lot of people with this issue but still not enough for their attention.
