Using a M.2 as a cache drive

I have a Samsung SSD 850 Evo M.2 (250gb) lying on my desk.
In my main system i am using a standard SATA SSD as my windows/programs drive.

 

could I plug the M.2 in on my Motherboard and use it as a cache drive (for things like MAYA and After effects and substance painter)
