My computer randomly goes into standby and my screen is black. If I am quick enough to press the power button, it displays 'Shutting Down...' then it tells me there are various programs that are still on and I have the option to not shutdown. Once I choose to not shutdown, my computer loads back into the desktop, with a lot of my programs off.

MSI Z87M Gaming

Corsair Vengeance 8GB

WD Caviar Black

Asus Direct CUII GTX 760

If you want me to give you more information, please tell me how to obtain the information, and I will glad fully give you it.

Cheers & Best Regards,

Arcapse

What are your power options set to? Do you have a sleep key on your keyboard you might be bumping?

When you mean power options, I have it on a custom power plan, high performance but it doesn't dim screen when AFK for a bit e.t.c.

I don't have any additional buttons on my keyboard, but I haven't used Windows 8.1 so there could be a keyboard shortcut for that the I accidentally do but I'm not sure. :/

No, windows 8 doesn’t have any new standby keyboard shortcuts i know of.

What about windows updates? is it set to auto?

Actually sending the shutdown command to windows is random. Normally if it’s an issue you get a BSOD or it just reboots and goes to a black screen.

Check and make sure neither of your power buttons are getting stuck down.

I've recently updated from Vista to 8.1, so there could be some from that.

I've set Win Update to download the updates but I can choose when to install them. <-- It used to be on auto.

My power buttons are not stuck down.

I'll wait and see if this fixes it.

If that doesn’t work, check you case for dust around the front panel connectors. Might be shorting the power pins. I doubt it, but weirder things have happened.

Good luck, i know it would drive me insane until i found out what was doing it.

I don't think it is dust, as I recently built this PC, regardless, thanks for your help so far, I'll get back to you if the problem persists.  :)

+1 for doing a clean install.  Upgrading from Vista to W8 can have nasty problems.

What I meant was I recently built this current PC that is having some problems, my old PC had Windows Vista, but they have no connection at all.

Cheers & Best Regards,
