CPU 90°C when idle

I bought an msi gaming laptop about 4 months ago and used it without serious issues during that time.

Recently I have realized that my laptop fans are running so loud even though i have not been playing any games for weeks and i was only using office programs and adobe photoshop.

Yesterday when i was using microsoft word and the fans are so loud again, laptop was low on battery and i plugged in the charger. Laptop immediately got BSOD and after it restarted i realized that nvidia driver got an update so, i have updated it thinking that was the reason but updating it didnt solve the overheating problem.

When i checked my laptop temperature on the desktop using msi dragon center it showed that the cpu is 94°C so i turned off my laptop and allowed it to cool and then when i turned on again, fans started to make so much noise again and when i checked it, the temperature was changing between 85-95°C and i have waited for half an hour but the degree didnt lowered.

Normally my laptops fans are too silent when not gaming but now they are working like its running a game all the time i didnt even try to play a game when its like that so i dont even know what would happen.

What might be causing my laptops cpu to run that hot when idle or using only word or photoshop? is there anyone who have experienced similar problems and what did you do to solve them? also a website i have seen telling that viruses can cause such problems. Is that possible or is it common? windows quick scan didnt find any threats though. I really need some help here i cant even do my work rn.

CPU: i5-9300H

GPU: Nvidia GTX 1650

RAM: 8GB

Storage: 256GB SSD + 2TB HDD

Did you buy it new?  If so, it should be under warranty, I'd let MSI figure it out.

Yes its under warranty and if i cant figure out what the problem is i will probably send it to msi but i want to know if its something i can solve because it takes too long for them to repair

choking the airflow by placing it on cloth/bed

bad thermal paste

dust clogged up the vents

huge amount of background software running

yes, me

manufacturing defect, part of the insulation sticker was covering part of the die, causing improper contact of the coldplate to the cpu

idle temps were in the 90s.

i found out only after 6 years, when it was dying, i fixed it by placing the insulation layer in the right spot, and cleaned the glue residue (it was tough to rub off even with alcohol)

depends on your internet habits, it you're the "boomer" type and clicks on everything people show them, then it's very possible

send it into MSI if it's still under warranty

It's more likely a cooling problem, but this is possible too. What "speed" and "Utilization" is your CPU running at when idle in your task manager?

i want to add that i am using the laptop on flat wooden surface and the fans are a little bit dirty but not too much also i dont think its a manufacturing issue because i have been using it for months and it was good all the time was only heating when i was gaming and that was pretty normal it all started yesterday. also i am not a boomer :) i have not had any problems with viruses for quite a long time. about the warranty i have contacted msi service but there arent any service point in my city and i have to send them the laptop but it will take longer due to covid19 so i will try some other solutions for now if i cant solve my problem i will send it

if it was a sudden occuring thing, then it might be caused by background software running

check cpu usage at "idle"

or if the laptop was jostled, the thermal paste could've cracked and not make proper contact between CPU die and coldplate

check for software issues first

just try not to touch anything hardware related if you are still under warranty

clean the laptop and dust it off and check if that helps. if it's still under warranty, then i would just sned it to msi.

cpu usage in the task manager is about 35%. in the task manager i realized that office click to run was using so much cpu and power usage i ended the task and waited idle for about 5 minutes now the cpu is 55°C also i realized that when i unplug the adapter it drops a little bit more idk why so maybe office was the problem but i use office too often so there should be a way to fix this any idea?

edit: also what exactly is office click to run i can use word without it working in the background and it was using 27% cpu no reason to have it running all the time

edit 2: without high cpu consuming apps in the background the temperature is now about 60-65°C and fans are quieter now. much better than 90°C and fans running at full speed. for now i can use it like that thank you all. if further problems occur i will probably send it to warranty. again thank you for helping me ^-^

Office shouldn't be giving a laptop a 90C idle, unless your fans just straight up aren't spinning.  Most likely suspect is cooling isn't properly seated to the processor.

If you want to go in and try and fix it yourself, you do you, but I'd send it in to MSI.  Going lone ranger on it could void your warranty.
