I mainly use my pc for gaming

cpu: AMD FX(tm)-6300 Six-Core Processor

gpu: Radeon RX 5500 XT

I recently bought a new gpu thinking it would boost my frames a lot, but it barely did.

My only question is if my cpu is the one holding my gpu back, if it is any recommendations ?

Your CPU is bottlenecking your GPU by a lot. What is your budget for a new CPU?

when I open up my Radeon software it is telling me a bunch of new cpu's I can upgrade to. At the top of the list is AMD Ryzen 9 3950x 16-Core processor which is $700. I was looking for something cheaper though and one that will give me a better gaming experience.

I'd reccomend getting a R5 3600. This would require a mobo and RAM swap. You can get B450 but compatibility is unknown for future processors, so B550 is your best bet. You can get by with the stock cooler, but you might want to try a dedicated cooler like a Hyper 212 to harness the most performance with overclocking. You can generally get any DDR4 RAM, but since this is Ryzen, 3200MHz and up is a good target.

Yes, FX is garbage. Get some Ryzen

The 5500xt is about the same as a rx 580 or better. It shouldn't really bottleneck unless u play at lowered setting or want the most fps in games like csgo. At the very most the frame rate would dip a bit low. If i were u I would overclock that cpu if u are noticing a bottleneck and wait for ryzen 4000.
