I know the general gist of actually physically replacing the CPU and mobo and reconnecting the components, but what steps should I take prior? What types of backups or recovery media should I create before hand? Do I have to do that or can I just connect my current hard drive to my new board with no issues? (Besides reactivating Windows) Thanks!

(For Windows 10)

Also what should I do after the replacement is complete? (Again, software-wise) What should I connect or how should I boot? Do I have to reinstall windows? Do I have to reinstall Windows if I want to run the OS off a new SSD? Do I have to remove windows on the original hard drive?

Install media for any OS you want to use should be created first so you can install the OS on the SSD, which needs an empty USB stick (you could go the old way with optical drives, but srsly it's 2020). You could try the old OS and move it over to the SSD but:

  1. old OS install will be cluttered with old stuff slowing down the system
  2. old OS may have stuff that conflicts with new hardware
  3. you need to backup files elsewhere

so I wont be bothered to try that.

 

As for data backup, if you're not trying the old OS install anyway you could just leave those files on the HDD and use the drive as a data drive. Maybe delete OS files once you've moved everything that has to be in the boot drive to the SSD (i.e. new boot drive).

So basically just install the motherboard and ssd and use the USB stick as if it were a new pc, then select the ssd to install windows on, then delete the original OS files from the hard drive?
