Budget (including currency): £

Country: UK

Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Gaming, Media Server, Browsing, CAD.

Other details (existing parts lists, whether any peripherals are needed, what you're upgrading from, when you're going to buy, what resolution and refresh rate you want to play at, etc):

Hello everyone. I am about to dip my toe into the PC building world after only previously using laptops and PlayStation. My budget has varied but started at £1500 but has ended up higher. Isn't that always the case?

Anyway, the PC will primarily be used for gaming, sim racing more often than not. At times I'll also be using it for AutoCAD/FreeCAD and browsing as well as a media server for the house. I've ended up just over £1700 on this

Now, being the novice I am, I was thinking about setting up the NVME drives up in RAID 0(performance?) for my OS and one or two heavily used games along with some software then using the two SSD's in RAID 1(redundancy?) for things like photos, videos, CAD files etc. The two HDD's would be for the media server so just video files. As I say, total newby so hope that makes sense and appreciate any comments. Thanks.

EDIT: Just to add, I'm in no rush so am prepared to wait and see what the new gen CPU's and GPU's have to offer.

I dont find my PCIe 3.0 x4 SSD perform any better than my SATA SSD as a boot drive holding games, so RAID 0 wont help you on these at all. in CAD it may help if you have huge professional projects, but my simple ones (just learning it) don't care either.

what will hit though is value side of things. Larger capacity ones tends to be cheaper per GB (like 1TB and 2TB), so you're inflating your own cost per capacity for no good.

Only use RAID 1 on servers that run all day. The most effective way is to keep separate backups because RAID runs both drives and running a drive itself wears it out.

Agreed that nvme raid 0 for os drive is total waste, use the second slot for a larger nvme drive for your cad stuff/games
