Budget (including currency): $2000 cad

Country: Canada

Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Gaming, rendering, editing

Other details (existing parts lists, whether any peripherals are needed, what you're upgrading from, when you're going to buy, what resolution and refresh rate you want to play at, etc): I run 28" 4k monitor 60hz, and a 70" tv 4k 60hz as a secondary screen.

This is my first build as stated in the title.  Can I get a little input from a newegg list I have at the moment?  Ideally if I could get the price down a bit I'd be happier, but I would rather spend the money to avoid future problems.

I didn't pick a gpu because I have a RTX 2060 in my current rig that will go into this new one.  I appreciate any opinions/advice.

Hmmm. From a quick glance:

  • PSU is grossly overpriced
  • That seems like a lot for that RAM
  • Get a better cooler

How much rendering/editing are you actually doing? Is it a hobby you do every once in a while, or something you do nearly every day?

Can you slap it in a PC part picker list? You are way overspending on many of the components, and I would recommend to wait for new hardware to come out before you buy anything. They will release in about two months.

Eh I don't think waiting really matters all that much. You won't see that much of an improvement with the new CPUs, and they'll be a lot more expensive.

Not an everyday thing, I could be fine with 32gb I'm sure.  I kind of wanted to future proof and leave room to go way higher demand, but no reason I can't just buy the 32gb for now.

That mean the cpu and motherboard I am looking at will likely fall in price a lot?

The issue is custom PC components are very expensive in North America right now due to high demand (because its summer and everyone is stuck in side with nothing to do due to covid), and shipping issues in Asia due to PPE being prioritized over PC components.  If you can' I recommend waiting a few months for supply and demand to stabilize and maybe get the new ryzen 4000.

Well, you don't know until you know. It's only two months away, so worth the wait in my book. Remind me in two months to come back to this thread and remind me to tell you that you were wrong (if that is the case, of course)

It's not hard to extrapolate based on past launches. Plus pricing now is lower than it was at launch, by a considerable amount, so yes, they will be higher priced.

People always forget that AMD lowers the prices of their CPUs as they age. What they cost now, they did not cost at launch.

It wasn't so much the RAM, but the 3900x doesn't make much sense if you're doing mostly gaming.

The only thing you're "losing out on" if you go with the 3700x, is slightly slower rendering times.

I'd get the 3700x, save the money, and if later on you're doing more editing, upgrade to something better then. You'll be able to get a better CPU for less money.

Well right now on Newegg, the r7 3700 is $419, and the r9 3900 is on sale for $619.  If that is a way better cpu, for only $200 more, I'd be ok with spending that for a more future proofed set up.  I know that with rendering the nvidia gpu can take the brunt of that load.  But I want room to be comfortable now and in a couple years too.

It's the same, or worse when it comes to games. It's marginally better at video stuff.

So, it really depends what you do. You said you don't edit that often, so no, I wouldn't say the money is worth it.

It would make more sense to buy cheaper now, and if you need more, upgrade later and enjoy a CPU with more IPC, which will get you more performance over all.

By the time an 8c16t CPU is noticeably slow, it'll be time to get an AM5 platform anyway.

Well thanks for the responses guys.  If I go with only 32gb ram, and the r7 3700 cpu, that will save me $500 right there.

I'll have to debate if I can wait the 2 months, I have the money now and I'm not the best saver :(  Also this current pc needs some work, need a reinstall I think before I start doing some hardware diag.  So I figured I want to upgrade any way, as she's an older rig with the motherboard capped at 16 gbs ram.  Then fix this one in my free time.
