Hey guys,

I am pretty new to networking please help me. Id like to obtain the fastest speeds I can to my office computer via Ethernet.

I have phone line and cat 6 plug in my garage and only the cat6 in my office.

As I understand it, I plug the RJ45 into the phone socket from my modem then another from the ethernet port from my modem to the cat 6. Then in my office I connect to the cat 6 socket to my Ethernet card? Or should i just run a cable from my modem to the office computer? The modem will be about 10 meters away from my office computer.

Also I should implement cat 6 cables in both connections to the cat 6 plug? I only have the old cat 5 atm.

Thanks.

EDIT: I haven't received my modem yet so I cant test it. I just want to be prepared and confident that Im connecting everything correctly for the best speeds I can get. I haven't had a proper home based internet connection for years...Just very excited to have one again. I know its a ignorant question.

Normlly ll the ethernet ports in your house will go to one plce, like. panel. Normally you want to plug a switch into that panel, then all the ports will be connected.

The only panels are the ones depicted. I have a couple more cat 6 only plugs in other bedrooms. I assume they are all connected in the walls. So once the modem is connected to the RJ45/Cat6 panel they should all work?  So then its just a matter of connecting the one in my office to the Ethernet port via cat6 to the cat 6 only panel?

Cheers

there is almost always some sort of patch panel somewhere in your house that all of these cables run to.

Are you sure there is no panel. Try checking all the closets.

Ive looked everywhere in my unit to find something as you've described, cupboards etc, but I cant find anything like it. I do live in Australia maybe there's different setup?

Those ports have to go somewhere. they can't just all be connected to each other. Can you check to see where in the walls the wires go?

I have searched everywhere and the only thing relatable to the wiring is this.

I live in a newly built unit and Australia has upgraded most of their infrastructure using a NBN plan (National Broadband Network) This upgrade has been done to my area. Most plans here implement FTTN (Fiber To The Node) or FTTH (Fiber To The Home). I think all connection go to this and this then this leads to the node on the street.

I have searched everywhere for what you describe and can not find anything.

I really appreciate you helping me mate.

That box is the isp equipment. The ethernet jacks in your home don't connect to that. Thats completely unrelated the the internal connection.

Look for a box like this image.png.1fc8305169b27283d021927a8a770b96.png

Check with the architect or designed where the cables run to.

I cant find anything like that mate. My unit is pretty small and I have looked everywhere. I will call the ISP and talk to them about this. Thanks

It seems I dont require a patch panel for my connection. I just plug my modem/router into the RJ45 socket and the Cat 5/6  port on the modem/router into the Cat 6 socket. I then connect my PCs Ethernet port via cat 6/5 to the cat 6 wall plug.

I have chosen a FTTN plan which is stated at being 50Mbps.

Thanks.
