So I finally decided to overclock my 4770K. So I set a multiplier of 46, and a voltage of 1.2v. When i boot into windows, and start IBT, about a minute in, my CPU temperatures quickly rocket to 100 and the CPU obviously shuts down. I am using an H100i, which I know is properly seated as un-overclocked with IBT running for a few hours it rarely breaks 70. What's up here?

"Silicon lottery" test it at a lower clock and work your way up your chip might not be able to do 4.6

4.6 is not always possible but you should not be able to get to 100oc with that cooler it should be just unstable and crash.  the max temp should be 60-70oc at  25oc room temps

@BenTheSciGuy  you defiantly have a bad cooler mount (or a dead pump).  Also how did you set up the fans and the pump.

how did you plug in the fan headers on the motherboard, which ones did you use? i would tweak the power profile a bit.  for example the pump fan speed i set to a minimum of 50% with 100% at 60oc.

make sure you can hear the pump running?

did you use thermal paste?

did you remove the plastic cover over the copper block ? (i have seen it happen makes a mess of melted plastic)

how are you getting the temperatures?

I would recommend using intel extreme tuning utility as it will give you individual core temps and has a build in stress tester.

Comments on the over clocking

4.6ghz will need more than 1.2v.  probably the full 1.3. it may not be possible at all

i would start of with a 4.2ghz oc with  1.25v and go from there

This is why one should always run stress test before doing OC to test if cooling is working. And I agree that 4.6GHz on 1.2V is bit unbalanced. You might want to run some better stress test like Aida or OCCT. I noticed that IBT doesn't have as much stressing on CPU than OCCT has.
