So, I might have made a dumb mistake. I opened my pc case cleaning for dust with a brush. I removed my CPU fan to remove any dust and connected the CPU fan again. Problem is I noticed I didn't have any thermal paste (forgot about it) and I noticed most of the thermal paste was gone anyway. That's because it's an old PC I got in late 2011 (it's an i5 2500) and I never removed the CPU fan since it was assembled 8-9 years ago. Now I noticed the CPU is significantly slower. So, what could be the reason?

* I didn't reapply thermal paste. But it was running fine before I removed it and the thermal paste ran out

* I didn't connect the fan properly.

Also is there any reason to test if the CPU is indeed throttling because lack of cooling?

Thanks.

use a program like hwinfo to check tempatures of the cpu. not reapplying thermal paste could defiantly be a cause of cpu thermal throttling even if the fan is spinning correctly

ok well you definitely need to replace it and not just stick the heaksink back on

I will do that as soon as it arrives. The thing is it was running fast right before I cleaned the PC. So could it be something else?
