Hello,

I recently built my first PC and it's having some minor issues. Most of the time, it works flawlessly but there are some random issues I can't diagnose.

Issue #1

The PC will sometimes turn itself off when booting into Windows. It seems to happen during a "cold start" where I haven't turned it on for a few hours.

Issue #2

The PC will sometimes crash? There's no BSOD or anything. But audio playing in spotify will loop/skip. It's not unresponsive though. I can still click open the start menu and open task manager. But you can't interact with the programs. You can open them, but clicking stuff won't work. I can't restart or turn it off. I have to force it off by holding the power button.

Issue #3

I had a BSOD once after logging onto windows. The error was memory management. Never had it again though (probably a one off)

I'm super new to building computers and I appreciate any feedback/troubleshooting I can get!

Thanks!

My Specs are below:

CPU: Ryzen 7 3800X (Stock AMD Cooler)

GPU: Asus ROG Strix RTX 2080 Super

Motherboard: Asus ROG Strix X570-E Gaming

Memory: G. Skill Ripjaws V 3600mhz (2x8GB)

SSD: 2x 1TB WD Blue NvME

HDD: 2TB Seagate Barracuda 7200RPM

PSU: Asus ROG 650W

1. Boot loops ?

Use memtest86 and OCCT to make sure it's not a ram problem.

2. Temps ?

Ddu and try disabling xmp

3. Use memtest86 and OCCT to verify that it's not a ram problem.

Hello thanks for your reply. I downloaded OCCT and ran it for about 5 minutes. I'm not sure how long I should run it. It said no errors though.

Is XMP the thing that OCs the ram to 3600? I think it's called DOCP on my motherboard. I disabled it and it seems like it's more stable now.

You can if you want leave it over night.

You might need to try to custom OC your RAM. Some motherboards just don't OC ram well.

You can also increase your SOC voltage to help memory stability. I have mine at 1.1V, don't go over 1.2V though. I have the ripjaws V 3600 CL16 kit and it runs fine at XMP/docp settings. I used those settings as a base and have even been able to tighten timings up more.

As Tofu said, run memtest overnight to make sure your ram is ok. I had ddr3 sticks go bad before and gave similar intermittent problems. Found which stick was bad by running one stick  at a time overnight on memtest.

Only other thing I can think of is bad mounting pressure, but with the stock cooler that shouldn't be possible.

I think I'll leave the RAM at 2133 for now until I'm more comfortable with playing around with the bios. But I'll def keep that in mind when the time comes.

I'll run memtest tonight and see if it's the RAM that is bad. Hopefully not though. Everything is brand new!

Thanks for your reply!

I've had bad ram right out of the box, so it can happen. Memtest is a great tool though.

Don't be afraid of the bios and OCing. I've gotten some pretty significant performance increases and power/temp decreases from OCing. As long as voltages don't go too high you won't hurt anything. Just do a little research for each setting before you change it. There are good ryzen OCing guides out there.

And ryzen does like faster ram a lot. Getting to that sweet spot of 3600mhz ram and 1800 infinity fabric clock is a good goal.

Bad news. Seems like disabling DOHP didn't fix the problem. Issue 2 came back again. I'll run memtest now and see what comes up.

Edit : and what are your temps ?

And at what workloads ?

CPU temps are high 50s to mid 60s celsius for light tasks like word processing, PDF viewing, Chrome browsing and Spotify in the background.

GPU is around 40-50 celsius.

What about under load ( like a stress test )

Also try ddu.

And memtest86 and OCCT as said above.

Running memtest now so I can't do ddu just yet. I'll try ddu right after memtest is done.

Under load is around 70C for CPU and 40-50 for GPU. Under load for me is GTA V ultra at 1080p. I haven't really tried stress testing my computer yet.

Thanks!

So while doing memtest, I was looking up Spotify crashing PCs. After 1 pass of memtest (I know I should've let it run longer), I tried uninstalling the Windows store version of Spotify and installing the exe version. I think that fixed it. The Windows store version is messing things up somehow.

I'll run memtest overnight tonight just to be extra sure it's not the RAM.

Thank you very much for your help!

Well installing the exe version of spotify did help. But the issue ultimately came back :(

I did memtest (8 passes) and nothing came up.

I tried DDU and reinstalled my display drivers. The issue is still here.

Any other ideas? Is it the PSU? Do I have enough power for my rig?
