Home Server for mostly Survailance and NAS-use

Budget (including currency): about 1.000€ with a bit of wiggle-room

Country: Germany

Workloads that it will be used for: staring as a file server, outdoor camera surveillance, and as a general workhorse for mundane stuff

Other details: building a home server to store my media and important back up files, eventually adding security recording. Its gonna live in the attic.

CPU: Maybe Ryzen ?

MOBO: I dont know/ Open for suggestions

GPU: Might buy a new onne for my desktop and use a GTX760

RAM: 8-16Gb of RAM

Storage: Propably NAS / WD Purple maybe an SSD cache idk yet

PSU: depends on the above

As far as OS is gonna go: Propably Linux and  KVM VM to run Windows in a vm as a hsot for Blue Iris.

Is BlueIris really the way to go ? any alternatives maybe ?

dont know toooo much ab home servers but heres what i can say

cpu -1000 budget - ryzen is the way to go. for it being a server probably a ryzen 7, or a ryzen 5 3600 might just do u fine

Mobo - a b450 will do u fine, probs b450 gaming plus max - its like the popular tomahawk, but with no usb-c and also cheaper.

gpu - the gtx760 is a pretty crap gpu, and in servers u don't need an amazing one. so yes, use that and upgrade your desktop

ram- 8bg wayy to little. 16gb is good, high end would be 32gb - 2x8 for - corsair lpx is great value. 3200mhz is probs the sweet spot

Storage- make sure the hard drives are at least 7200rpm

psu- yeah i would recommend (everyone else pls dont hate on me) a corsair cv series. They wont blow up your house and are pretty cheap. however, if you can, maybe a cxm series- higher quality psu. You wont need more than 550w, 650w will future proof it

The GPU would come in use for the live Video feeds. Atleast I think.
Do ireally need that much RAM ? I wont be gaming on it

Please explain the 12tb of ultra slow storage? I understand most of these survallence servers use 5400rpm, but does op need 12 tb of it? At that price?

RAID 1, so 6 TB.

Actual storage requirements depend on numerous factors. https://www.seagate.com/ca/en/video-storage-calculator/ is a handy calculator.

CPU has hardware virtualization. Four hyperthreaded cores should easily support some vm.
