Hi everyone,

My first built, after using internet cafe for 15 years so forgive me if the question is stupid.

I got an MSI z490-A pro motherboard with a 10700k processor.

My ram of choice was this G.Skill Ripjaws V 4x8GB DDR4-4000MHz (F4-4000C18Q-32GVK)

However after seeing a video on youtube stating that if your motherboard's channel is dual there is no point on going 4 modules,

i am having second thoughts on whether i made the right choice.

Should i go for 2x16gb at 3600mhz C18 instead?

Thank you in advance

PS. Gpu is RTX 2080 super if it makes any difference or is needed to answer my question on what to do

Welcome to the forum!

If you already purchased that 4x8GB kit, you might as well leave it. It's just that you won't be able to upgrade to 64GB without replacing your current memory.

If you didn't, then yeah go for a 2x16GB kit, but don't go for 3600MHz CL18. I'd get at least something like 3600MHz CL16 or a 3200MHz CL14 B-die kit and do some overclocking with it.

Desktop: Intel Core i9-9900K | ASUS Strix Z390-F | G.Skill Trident Z Neo 2x16GB 3200MHz CL14 | EVGA GeForce RTX 2070 SUPER XC Ultra | Corsair RM650x | Fractal Design Define R6

Laptop: 2018 Apple MacBook Pro 13"  --  i5-8259U | 8GB LPDDR3 | 512GB NVMe

Peripherals: Leopold FC660C w/ Topre Silent 45g | Logitech MX Master 3 & Razer Basilisk X HyperSpeed | HIFIMAN HE400se & iFi ZEN DAC | Audio-Technica AT2020USB+

Your CPU only supports dual-channel so 4 RAM sticks don't give you higher performance than 2. Just leave it as is because 32GB will do fine for a long time.

If someone did not use reason to reach their conclusion in the first place, you cannot use reason to convince them otherwise.

I have ordered it and i suppose i can change it, but only if it wont perform as well as the 2x modules or something like that. I dont want to change the order if i dont have to

Bandwidth wise

It's the same since every LGA 1200 cpu only has 2 memory channels

So your only gaining capacity but your putting more pressure on the imc

If you only game just go for 2x 8GB and call it a day. You won't benefit from more memory...

What i dont understand is: since my CPU only supports dual-channel, is there a drawback on using 4 ram sticks? Or is it just that i will get the same performance as i would get from a dual module 2x16 ram? If its going to perform worse with my 4x8gb only then i will change it

There is no real drawback to using 4 sticks. But the CPU just won't really take advantage of more than 2 sticks. For example 2x16GB should perform the same as 4x8GB.

Thank you very much. This is essentially what i was asking. Since the difference in pricing is only 20euros, i dont want to get into changing the order for no reason.
