Yeah, downsampling when you edit is hit and miss. It's not like downsampling when playing games, as it's also being compressed. If you're doing serious editing though, with effects and such, it can be useful to record at a higher resolution as it will give you freedom to play with scaling and such, just as many videos are filmed at 4k and then rendered out at 1080p. It also allows you to keep it at 1080p down the line if you decide to.
