Hey guys.

After a little advice. It's come time to upgrade my kids PC as it has now they're a little older and into more AAA titles the machine is starting to show how low-end it was.

To be fair it did me fine for a couple of years before I built a new system and gave them my old one but its now upgrade time.

The current specs of the system are:

Intel Core i3 6100

MSI H-170a PC Mate Motherboard

nVidia GTX 1050ti GPU

4 x 4gb Corsair Vengeance 2666Mhz DDR4 (Yes I know the motherboard only supports  2133mhz. Blame my advisor when I was putting the system together)

128gb SSD Boot Drive

2TB Mechanical HDD

The first part of my dilemma is this. The current motherboard supports (with a BIOS update) up to 7th gen Intel chips so I could potentially put an i5 7600 in there which I can pick up for about £100 second hand, however if I do that other than jumping to an i7 7700 that's the end of the upgrade path for that board and it's an additional £100.

Or do I scrap the existing motherboard and CPU and replace it with a Ryzen 3 3300x/Ryzen 5 3600 and a compatible B450 board which will cost somewhere around the £200-250 mark. Not looking to spend too much on the motherboard. Basic featuresets will be more than enough for my kids.

The next dilemma is what GPU to go for. I was initially thinking the GTX 1660ti however for around the same price or a just a few £ more I can get an RTX 2060 or Radeon 5600XT. Are these potentially overkill for the CPUs I've mentioned they could potentially be paired with? If so what could be a better pairing.

Either try and snag a used i7 (6700 or 7700 doesn't really matter) and a new GPU or do a full overhaul to Ryzen.

I wouldn't get an i5-6600/7600 as 4C/4T CPUs are showing their age badly in modern AAA titles. If you could find a good deal on a used i7-6700/7700, that'd be a solid upgrade over the i3. Going with a 3300X and a good B450 board could be better in the long run though, because you'd have an upgrade path.

The 1660 Super is a solid choice for a GPU upgrade. It's about on par with the 1660Ti in terms of gaming performance, but comes in at a lower cost.

Between the 2060 and 5600XT, the latter is faster, with the condition that you should look for one of the models that's got the 14Gbps memory VBIOS. A couple of examples would be the Powercolor Red Dragon and Sapphire Pulse models.

Laptop: 2018 Apple MacBook Pro 13"  --  i5-8259U | 8GB LPDDR3 | 512GB NVMe
