Sorry if there is already a thread for this but I am wanting to build a server for home. here is what I am wanting it to run

1. Plex server  (24/7)

2. a basic pc for web and minecraft. (This is for my kids to use and will be running most of the day.)

3. a more moderate gaming pc (games like civ 5, StarCraft, Diablo, etc. )

4. at least 4 more vms running windows 10, 2 windows sever 2016, and a linux server

I am learning and want some thing that i can use to study and test. any help or suggestions would be helpful. just getting into the tech field sorry.

my kids will be on the basic desktop set up and they will most likely be on it most of the time but never more than one of them. i will be using every thing else. budget is about 2k and I already have 5 WD red 4tb drives for storage but will be getting an ssd as well to add in. as for the form-factor it is not that important to me.

Edit: adding in type of drives

Having multiple users at once for one pc is a pain, id probably just get a cheap desktop or laptop for the kids, and keep it seprate.

For the rest. Id probalby run windows 10 on the system, use hyper-v for vms, and run all of your needed program in a vm.

So i will not need any thing to keep a Plex server runnig on it?

Nothing really special is needed, almost any desktop can do it. If you need lots of transcoding, you gonna want some extra cpu power, id probalby go something like 3700x here, maybe 3900x.

Id run plex in a vm, makes it nicer to work with.

And give the system extra ram for vms, id start at 32gb
