Exactly haha, the ONLY time it really becomes an issue is when running 128GB+ with 8 full dimms, or 1st gen Ryzen lol, other than that no one even mentions it because it really does not matter, and other than the low low chance of it not being compatible there are zero compromises to a kit that is not QVL listed.

Yup haha, but it's easy, all you are changing is DRAM frequency and DRAM voltage so it's pretty straight forward.

CL or CAS Latency refers to how many clock cycles in it takes for the RAM module to access the specific data set in one of its columns, so lower is better. I always recommend CL16 or better, just because it's so readily available and you never really pay more for a CL16 kit vs CL18 so might as well get the lower latency kit.

That makes a lot of sense actually. And yeah, I don't think I'll ever need anything more than 64GB of RAM. And I probably don't even need that much. Lmao

Yeah, sounds about the same as what I did with my CPU. Just shot for a speed, upped the voltage until it was stable, and used R20 on 10 minutes loops to test stability and temps. (Only 10 min cuz I'm running an NH-D15, so I don't have to wait forever for max temp like liquid)

Oh, so that's CAS latency. Okay. I think I'm thinking of something else then. I'll have to check to make sure, but I think that C15 number I saw is a Corsair only like serial number or something like that. Didn't check the CAS latency on the kit. But I'll check it now though

Nope, just checked. You're right. The C15 I saw is the CAS latency. I'm just dumb. Not surprising, I know. Lol

Just use R15 for a quick test for a memory OC, it would liekyl crash right away if not stable, altough what usually happens with a memeory OC is that you cannot post and it does into a boot loop to re-try, then reset to defaults.

But similar to a CPU OC yes, even easier IMO.

Right right. Makes sense. Yeah, I didn't know that R15 was better for memory tests. I thought it was just for CPUs. That's why I started using R20, figured it was just the updated version of R15 for CPU testing. Lol. But yeah, I'll have to get that downloaded and ready for when I buy the RAM. Okay cool. Yeah, sounds like much less of an issue than OC'ing the CPU, if you don't have to reset the CMOS when you go too far and it just resets for you. Lol

True though. I'm just trying to learn what I can ya know? My 7800x is actually sitting delidded on der8auer's DirectDie mount and has liquid metal cooling it. That was my first every delid and my first ever real OC on a CPU. So we're out here still learning. Lol

Oh yeah, off topic question, but you seem to know what you're talking about. Would doing a BIOS update help with anything like memory or anything like that? I know there's a BIOS update for my board, since it was made and sold when the 7th gen Skylake-X CPUs were new. There's a BIOS update I saw a while back for the new "10th" gen Skylake-X CPUs they sell now. But I could swear it said it was mainly just for the ability to run the newer CPUs on my board, not so much support for anything else newer. But would that be a good idea to do the update or just leave it, since I'm running the older CPUs anyway?

It's only better in the sense that it takes a lot less time, that way you don't need to wait as R20 runs much longer, R20 is only now a thing for CPU testing because of the high core counts we now see, thanks to Threadripper lol. A true memory test would be MemTest86. Most likely if you can post with an applied memory OC you are likely stable, unlike a CPU the memory frequency is locked so if set to 3200MHz it will remain so all the time, where as a CPU can boost and have increased voltage pull (at stock not OC'd).

I've never had to touch my CMOS button when trying to OC memory.

A bios update will only help memory stability if is specifically applies to a memory support or stability, usually the update will have info on what it improves, if it does not change anything with memory and you are otherwise stable I would not recommend doing so. Not sure about X299 but sometimes a bios that is meant for a newer gen of CPU can negatively effect performance/stability if running an older gen CPU. In general X299 is a very stable and mature platform though so there was not many issues overall when compared to other platforms.

Right. Okay. Makes sense. Yeah, I'm gonna have to do that. Seems a lot easier and quicker than CPU overclocking. Yeah, I play CS mainly and even then, I think I rarely ever, if at all, reach the 4.7 OC I put on the CPU when gaming. But I also play on 1440p, so I'm more GPU bottlenecked right now anyway, since I'm still on the 10 series GPU.

Right, yeah, that's much better if you never have to touch the CMOS. Lol. Oh nice! Yeah, the delid was actually super fun to me. And der8auer's DirectDie plate looks sick, if you ask me. Lol

Okay. That's kind of what I figured. I'll have to look again, but I'm pretty sure it did just say it updated support for the newer CPUs and that was it. If it is that, I'll just stick with everything I have now and go from there. Yeah, that's the one good thing about still being an Intel owner, their platforms are pretty much matured and stable no matter what. But with what AMD has done and fixed with Ryzen, I'm not surprised they've pretty much taken the consumer space back now a days

Yeah higher resoltuions push more laod on the GPU, RTX was not a worthwile upgrade from the high end 10 sereis cards anyways.

Yeah the delid was a cool new experience, it's a fun new way to tweak your hardware. The der8auer kit is pretty legit.

Yeah if nothing about memory is mentioned I would not bother with a Bios update.

I've been a long time Intel user but AMD has come a very long way. I adopted 1st gen Ryzen at launch, stability was bad. Honestly 1st gen launch was rushed regardless, and it took nearly a year for stability issues to be worked out. But now my R7 3800x and X40 motherboard (with non QVL listed RAM) have given me exactly zero issues. Some of the big bios improvements have also come from from vendors dedicating more time as AMD became a more viable platform. A lot more has been spent on R&D making overall support, features, and support even better.

Yeah, that's true. For the money, it was a waste, which is why I didn't get into it. The only way up from a 1080ti was the 2080ti. And $1200? No thanks. Lol. I'll just wait for their 3000 series, wait a month for drivers and games to catch up, and then overpay into that generation. Lol

Yeah, that's true. Makes sense.

Yeah, I'm late to the PC party, so I didn't build my first PC till 2013. And AMD was the space heater joke back then still. Lol. So I went Intel and haven't gotten the chance to move over yet, but also don't see the need to spend the money since my setup works just fine for now. But yeah, that's true. It started off pretty bad, but the company seemed to push the fixes out quick and listen to what reviewers and consumers were saying, as well as what they knew needed to be fixed. But yeah, your system sounds really nice! Yeah, once they started taking a huge part of the market back, seems like all the companies were hoping on the Ryzen train. I'm glad to see how far they've come so quickly. Brings some way overdue competition to the market

Yeah I agree, that's way I did not bother with RTX 2xxx, planning to upgrade with next gen but we will see.

Yeah if I were you I'd also stick to X299, and if you really wanted to you could search for a used CPU to upgrade to in the future, there is a lot of room within that platform.

I really only built my first PC back in 2013 as well, but my Skylake build is what really got me into the enthusiast side. Since then it has been an uphill battel and my wallet is the loser.

Yeah 1st gen Ryzen stability was so bad at launch that I built a whole second system with the 8700k.

I am interested to see what 4th Ryzen gen has to offer and also anticipating some changes in the GPU market both on NVidia and AMD's end but time will tell.
