Other details This rig is intended as a retro gamin rig. I might dual boot a light linux distro for more modern tasks.

I want to build the PC I wish I had as a kid. It has been a while since I worked with hardware from this era, and I want to avoid incompatibilities and mismatches as much as possible, and I want to make sure that I get to enjoy the best stuff PCs of this era had to offer. I am not sure I like the GPU, it seems like the 8800 GT is the more classic choice, but the 9800 GTX is still period accurate and may offer more of the precious, precious FPS. Also, I feel like I would want to get a 1 GB GRAM. I don't remember what I had back then, but 512 MB sounds silly.

 

Also, I am not too happy about the case I found. I want at least an ODD and an FDD, but I would not mind having an extra 5 1/4" bay or two to put something silly like a tape drive or an Iomega Click!, just because. I would, however, prefer something beige and with a front intake fan to keep temps in control.

 

I will not be overclocking anything.

Couple recommendations:

 

Get a used dell from that time with a core 2 quad. Would be around 50-60. Put a good quality psu in it and feel free to insert any gpu. Case swap is also very possible as most just used atx boards then.

DO NOT get that case + psu combo it will not handle your specs at all and is a very real fire hazard.

I agree with this, be nice to this old hardware and get a nice PSU.

Want the most oldschool look?

The CIT Mars case is often on ebay

Or if you want a more premium look the zalman z9. It's from 2009 and has had many iterations and can still be found new in it's edgy 2009 glory.
