Upgrading 2016 HP Pavilion

AMD A10-9600P
Go to solution Solved by Jedimaster99,

sorry to disappoint but it probably wouldn't help the battery that much to replace the HDD, but it definitely won't hurt it.

I don't own one, but this spec sheet https://support.hp.com/gb-en/document/c05243204 does not mention an m.2 expansion slot.

opening a laptop is pretty easy if own a screw driver. there are usually a bunch of tutorials online for your laptop model, and if there aren't it usually involves flipping it belly up and removing a few screws. I wouldn't let a small child open my laptop, but if you're even mildly careful the chances of damage are relatively small.

transferring files is usually easiest with a desktop. you just plug in both drives and copy / paste them in file explorer. however, if that's not possible you could upload your data into cloud storage.

I've been thinking this over for a while now and want to make my laptop much faster (an hopefully extend the battery life) by hopefully adding an M.2 SSD or replacing the HDD with a SATA SSD, as it is clear that the 2TB HDD is holding the laptop back, and I have only used around 400GB. I wanted to ask a few main questions:

- Does anyone have any experience upgrading a 2016, 15.6", AMD, HP Pavilion laptop, (specifically HP Pavilion 15-aw009na) and if so, is there either an M.2 slot or an extra SATA bay?

- If there is not an M.2 slot or an extra SATA bay then how would I transfer my files from my SATA HDD over to a new SATA SSD?

- Bearing in mind that the battery life of these older AMD laptops is horrific anyway, how much would an SSD improve the battery life over the current HDD?

- As I have never opened up the laptop before, how likely would it be that I could permanently damage it, as this is the deciding factor for me?

My choice for SATA SSD would be this https://www.amazon.co.uk/Crucial-BX500-CT480BX500SSD1-Internal-NAND/dp/B07G3KRVWP/ref=redir_mobile_desktop?ie=UTF8&aaxitk=XkvZbbQfTB5kqKEUyNY5ag&hsa_cr_id=7034086770002&ref_=sbx_be_s_sparkle_td_asin_1&th=1

And my choice for an M.2 SSD would be this https://www.amazon.co.uk/Western-Digital-WDS500G2B0B-Blue-Internal/dp/B073SBX6TY/ref=sr_1_5?dchild=1&keywords=m2+ssd&qid=1592378512&s=computers&sr=1-5

Thank you so much, Ben

Also, just wondering, has anyone got any not so obvious tips to increase HDD performance and extend the battery life

Thank you for the reply! I wasn't holding on to much hope about an M.2 slot to be honest, as it is 4 years old and was low/mid range at the time.

I did find a tutorial once when I had to get the screen replaced (didn't do it myself, sent it off to Currys but I was curious) and there's just the screws on the bottom plus having to pop the top plastic with the keyboard and trackpad off, which is the part that worries me most.

As for transferring files, that does sound very easy as I could just use my desktop for that.

Thanks again!
