for whatever reason this last year have been completely done with gaming. I'm not sure why they just really don't interest me anymore. Being that gaming was the only thing holding me to windows i'd like distro suggestions. Lighter distros are preferred but not required (r7 1700, 16gb ram, and a 1070ti not a monster but good). More than anything I want something that doesn't have slowdown. I want snappy all the time, things to be instant, and importantly halfway decent software support (dont want to compile my own stuff). Ubuntu even with gnome always seems laggy for me and im not sure why. I also always have terrible screen tearing for whatever reason (noting this because i've done fullpipeline composition or whatever its called and it doesn't fix it). So besides Ubuntu all suggestions are valid. Thanks!!

LXDE or LXQt on Arch Linux?

Main: AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D, Nvidia GTX 1080 Ti, 16 GB 4400 MHz DDR4 Linux - Fedora

Arch if you want to setup the system yourself, if you go this route I recommend using the f2fs file-system for nvme.

Arch has one of the largest repositories thanks to the AUR. You will probably have to compile anything from the AUR you might want, but you can use something like yay to automate it. Its very rare that a package I need or want isn't in the standard Arch repositories or the AUR.

Manjaro if you want Arch without the hassle and a 2 week stable update delay.

Could look at KDE for a desktop environment, I use it and recommend it. Much lighter on resources than it used to be. If you want it to be more snappy, disable the compositor.

Ubuntu Remixes/Flavors that are very light: Lubuntu, Kubuntu, Xubuntu, Ubuntu Lumina Remix

Other general recommendations: Manjaro, Project Trident, Void Linux, AntiX, MX Linux is pretty light, Mint is fairly light, Fedora has non-gnome versions somewhere, elementaryOS is decently light (Pantheon is better than Gnome), and the last thing I can come up with is if you have the time to learn how to do it: Arch, Gentoo, and Linux From Scratch are good options for full control.

My absolut favorite is OpenSUSE. With Leap 15.x you get a rock solid System, if you wanna have all the latest stuff, tumbleweed is for you. Use it on all my systems, including Laptop, Server, Desktop and even Raspberry Pi and it never let me down. Plus, it has this great tool called YaST, which helps you managing your system. It makes it very easy to partionize a hard disk for example, or to install Nvidias drivers.

I personally like Linux Mint.  I runs well on my laptop and the default cinnamon GUI is similar to what you will be used to coming from Windows.  I use the Ubuntu based 19.3, but if like Kelvinhall above you want to avoid Ubuntu based distros they have a Debian based version.  The community is pretty friendly as well.

I've used Manjaro and liked it.  I wasn't thrilled with Ubuntu, but I don't really like the Gnome desktop.  Zorin felt slow to me compared to other distros.

One of the nice things about Linux though is if you find a distro you like, but don't like the desktop you can change it.

If you decide to get back into gaming, it is a lot easier on Linux now than in the past.  Especially on Steam.

One of the complaints about Mint is it is a little fugly out of the box.  I attached 2 pictures of my desktop to show some of the customizations you can do.
