Better? In what way? "Better" is a judgement based on suitability for a purpose. Without a specific use case, it is impossible to answer your question in any way other than saying that each has its pros and cons and which would be better will be dependent on the user, and use, of the system.

"Better" in terms of:

* Cost

* Time

* Preparation

* Quality

Both have pros and cons. And as kpluck has correctly pointed out, you need some way to quantify "better." Does better mean last longer? Does it mean performs better? What benchmarks are you using? There are many different angles by which to judge something like this. Pitting one against the other can produce negative and positive results on both sides of the fence.

If we're being extremely general, pre-built systems typically offer good value for the uninitiated. You get something that should do the job, at a reasonable price for your budget, and usually have warranty and other technical support. On the other hand, sometimes they use proprietary parts that limit potential upgrades, and they may or may not have other associated fees.

As for custom builds, you're not really specifying if you mean self-built or company-built. Company-built customs, like pre-built companies, offer warranty and technical support, but you get parts generally tailored for your desired use case. You will also generally have an upgrade path should the company keep that in mind. This option is typically more expensive since you're getting personal service, as well as technical and warranty support.

And finally, with self-built customs, parts are as cheap as you can acquire them and you can pick any compatible parts you desire in pursuit of your PC's purpose. The primary downside is that technical support, expertise and any other issues are yours to solve and remedy. For some people that is worth it, and for others, not so much.

I'm talking about what would make people consider going for a pre-built or custom. Granted that Customs may be better in terms of price and performance.

Custom can be either self-built or built by companies using the parts you picked.
