Need some help planning an FTB MC Server Build

Budget (including currency): Not really an issue. I guess no more than $600 USD (happy using previously loved ((used)) parts)

Country: United States of Freedom (USA)

Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: FTB Direwolf20 Minecraft Server

Other details (existing parts lists, whether any peripherals are needed, what you're upgrading from, when you're going to buy, what resolution and refresh rate you want to play at, etc): I currently am using an old Dell rack mounted server, but the CPU's are NOT up to snuff. Constant rubber-banding. Bandwidth is not an issue 1Gb down, 50Mb up.

I would like to have one that can run the server buttery-smooth with the numerous mods and hold maybe no more than 10 ppl on a normal day. (Maybe 20)

Let me know if I am missing any info.

Thanks in advance!

PS: Doesn't HAVE to be rack mounted, just prefer it that way. Even if I need to get a server case. I like the clean look.

a 3300x OC, the issue is most of the top end i7 in older gens are way to much so new ryzen 3rd gen is often the best.

Yeah, as LTT said "Even USED Intel CPUs aren't a good value anymore" but when you are running a minecraft server on it you don't need more cores than that which negates the entire upgrade path of Ryzen except to low end 4th gen with good single threaded, which is probably worth it in my book if you have a bit extra to spend. I can get optiplexs for CPU cost on eBay + $20 tho so generally if I need something simple I just grab one of those.

thing is most are slower than 3rd gen ryzen in single core.

OP: any SSDs in the system?

when 4000 APUs come out I'd get a system with one of those. swap in the 4000 chip when it comes out

I have a few lying around. I would prefer SSD's. If anything than to speed up the server startup.

okay. I tossed in 2 for raid 1 to make sure you got data protection and fast enough reads.

what are you using to host MC? most linux distros allow you to run them in raid and install it.

you don't need a card but avoid motherboard RAID.

W10. I'm somewhat familiar with linux, but definitely not fluent in it.

okay so that makes running raid for boot a pain

Yeah see the point I was making is that you are able to get the used i7 + motherboard + memory + power supply + case basically a whole working computer minus the SSD (privacy reasons I guess) and you can get that entire thing for 2/3 of the price of just the CPU in your PCPP list there. It's just not affordable to do that if you are going to do a basic minecraft server.

I'm seeing 4770 systems for like 200-400$ the thing is most of the ones older than 4th gen haswell aren't going to be a good upgrade over the 5500/5600 xeons

I am planning on upgrading my gaming rig to a ryzen 7 or 9. Maybe I could use my current i7-7700k and Mobo for a start?

That's a second gen Ryzen CPU though, not a third gen. Lol. Its CPU cores are about comparable to Haswell in single thread.  I can also find whole working haswell systems with SSDs for less than $300 all day.  That's a terrible value for a server.

Just look at micro centers refurb deals.  A Haswell i5/i7 with 16GB of RAM and an SSD is $300-400 tops.

my point was swap it out for the 4000 APU when it comes out in a few weeks.

look at what I put in it, some of these are just going to be fixed no matter what you build. that is the cheapest rack mount 4u cases on newegg, Dual SSDs is highly recommended ect

Hell, buying a chinese x79 setup with a Xeon or something would probably get the job done for really cheap.
