So my laptop is a HP G62 from 2011 and it has 4gb of ram and a Core i3 330m Windows 7 home premium

I've been trying for a while now to upgrade my laptop from 4gb of ram to either 6gb or 8gb and everytime I turn it on after I put the ram in which is 2x 4gb sticks for 8gb and or 1x 2gb and 1x 4gb stick I got it to work once and now all it does to either blue screen then reboot or just reboot entirely.

I've done a lot of research and everything says that it's capable of having up to 8 gigs installed and it just won't accept it

Could anyone help me with this please?

Thank you in advance

Re-seat the sticks if did't work, maybe one of the RAMs are dead. Try each stick alone.

Yes the processor supports up to 8GB's (https://ark.intel.com/content/www/us/en/ark/products/47663/intel-core-i3-330m-processor-3m-cache-2-13-ghz.html).

But the motherboard of the notebook does not (https://support.hp.com/sk-en/document/c02540066).

You could try to update the BIOS, maybe they released a better one since the release in 2011.

So, does it work every time when you just have the 4GB stock RAM in?
Have you tried with just the new 4GB RAM without the stock one to see if that worked by itself?

Can you access the BIOS when all the RAM is installed? Does it properly report all the RAM as being present?

Where did you get that new RAM ? Was it bought used?
One possible issue, is that while the new RAM technically fits the specs, it's refusing to "play nice" with the old RAM, causing instability. That's why, for compatibility's sake, it's usually better to outright replace the old RAM and get a new Dual Channel memory kit.

TetraSky I have 2x 2gb sticks in my laptop at the moment 1x 4gb doesn't work and I've checked in the bios both 4gb sticks come up as working. I've done a memory test in the bios and it passed and it still doesn't boot with the 8gb installed

Have you tried re-installing windows entirely ? By that I mean a CLEAN install of Windows 7, using a Win7 ISO and using the windows key located somewhere on the body (or in bios) of the laptop to activate it? (Or better yet, Windows 10)
That would at least bypass any possible software restriction that HP might have built-in their crapwares. Because sometimes, it can be something as dumb as some config in Windows that's causing issues. Especially if it works in the BIOS.

And if Windows still doesn't work, you may as well try Ubuntu if you already like it.

If i'm not mistaken Ubuntu is a version of Linux?

Yes. Though personally I prefer Mint, since it's closer to Windows in looks.

If you play games, there's the "playonlinux" that you can add to most/all linux distro.

Really up to you

The difference that you'll notice most is the look of the Start Menu. I'm partial to Cinnamon due to being a darker and more "modern" looking UI overall.

As with any other Linux distro, you can "try it" before installing it. So you'll at least know if it runs ok and recognize all the RAM, before committing.
