Surround sound stopped working - Windows 10 issue (SOLVED)

MrBom

Hi guys,

So, I got a Denon receiver with 5.1 audio connected to a Windows 10 PC, via HDMI to a RTX 2080.

The setup have been working fine for over a year, but last week the surround channels stopped working, only the two front speakers a playing sound. I noticed this, as there is no sound when the actors speaks in a movie. I just saw the Hobbit trilogy a few weeks ago, no problem, now there is only background music and effects, no speech whatsoever.

When I run the test in Windows Audio settings, it’s also only the two front speakers that play a sound. The three others and the Sub don’t make a noise at all, but I can see that Windows is playing.

The setup works with my Xbox, so I’m pretty sure it’s a Windows problem.

Any advice?

My motherboard is a Asus Z390-F Gaming

I've donwloaded the newst driver from the website and installed it, but it didn't do the job.

my best guess is that there is some audio software where a couple channels got turned off somehow or the port is broken

@MrBom Try reinstalling Audio software in Windows safe mode.

and as Nick Neuburg said ''check the ports''.

@Nick Neuburg was also my guess, but where could that be?

Would be strange if the port just broke, but sure...

@Naul Ok, I can try that.

Didn't seem to do any difference, but could it be the Nvidia driver?
I'm not using the onboard audio chip, but the graphics card.

Nvidia has nothing to do with sound controllers, perhaps your Receiver got broken?

Sorry this is new to me, i think you are right.

reinstall your graphics card driver (nvidia) that you got your digital audio set upped on it.

Pretty sure the receiver is fine, Xbox and Chromecast works at it should.

The funny thing is, that the receiver can see that I've connected a "Multi-channel" input, which means it's not just a stereo input.

I will try the Nvidia driver reinstall soon, after I'm done gaming, the headphone works as normal, but is also connected to its own DAC.
