3700x vs 3900x?

Very unlikely. The 3900x is only really recommended as a workstation processor. Even then, a 3700x is great for productivity. You won't use a 3900x to it's full potential. You performance will be exactly the same as if you got a 3700x, and you'll be throwing away money.

Hi

Amazon Aus is selling both the 3700x and the 3900x for the lowest price the part has ever been sold for (according to pcpartpicker). I am thinking of getting the 3700x now and I can just return if the xt processors are better (right now they seem like they're not going to be worth). Or should I get the 3900x and maybe this would give me an extra year or two? I am mainly gaming so I know no real difference now, but I'm expecting games to use multicores soon.

Thanks

Edit: the 3900x is $170AUD more (~$115USD)

You'll never use the full power of a 3900x for just gaming. If you'll only be gaming, save your money, get a 3700x, and  spend the extra money elsewhere.

The 3900x is a waste for what you're going to use your system for. Games won't start using that many cores to the point you'll see any performance difference for probably 5+ years.

You can't return it if you've already installed it.

Sounds great! I am playing on 1080p 144hz so maybe 2080s a bit overkill lol but I need the frames haha

But a 1440p monitor... Please.

You can drive 1440p with a 3600 + 5700XT perfectly fine.. 3700x + 2080S for 1080p gaming in borderline sinful.

If you go from 800x600 to 1440p, you honestly won't know what to do with all of your new found power.
