Downsizing Gaming Rig - 2.5" or Network Storage?

gevans

Decided to downgrade my main gaming build from full ATX to ITX. The case i am using is the Silverstone SST-SG13B.  It does support 3.5" drives, but in order to save space and increase airflow I was planning on downsizing the drives to 2.5". My current storage is 512gb NVME m.2 and 2x 2tb 3.5" Firecuda Drives for games

What would you suggest for my game drives, do I downsize them to 2x 2tb Firecuda 2.5" drives. Go for 1 single 4tb 2.5" drive or keep my 3.5" drives but put them into a NAS and use them as network drives for storing my games? My house is full Cat6 hardwired so network speeds shouldn't be an issue

I have a 2.5" Seagate SSHD (not a firecuda admitedly, the one that's a gen older), and it's slow as shit. I guess it's fine for singleplayer games, but I wouldn't recommend it for multiplayer games where loading in quickly matters.

If I were you, I'd get a bit creative and get four 1TB SATA SSDs, mount 3 of them properly, and stick the last one in a corner somewhere with velcro tape. 1TB seems to be the best price to GB right now, they're not that expensive (Starting around £75 for a cheap Dram-less, or £100 for a faster DRR3 cache drive).

I would get a 1tb m.2 since you should have space for a second one and use that. sata or nvme

Yeah the ITX board I have does have a second m.2 slot, Was possibly trying to avoid a second ssd if possible, I have a lot of media / games stored across my 2x 2tb drives currently and a 2tb m.2 in the UK is going to cost me at least £230+ ($280)

I would say its a good investment and mabey get an external enclosure for your old drives to keep movies or shows on you dont plan on watching any time soon.
