I wan't to upgrade my system. I could really use some advice.

Lotus08

Budget (including currency): $1000

Country: US

Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Assassin's Creed Odyssey and other games with similar graphics

Other details (existing parts lists, whether any peripherals are needed, what you're upgrading from, when you're going to buy, what resolution and refresh rate you want to play at, etc):

So, I basically have a system that I wan't to upgrade. I have had this PC since January 2015.

CPU: Intel Core i5-6400 @ 2.70 GHz
GPU: GeForce GTX 750 Ti
RAM: 16gb (x2 8gb)
MB: B150M Pro-D
PSU: 400W

And I have 2 monitors.

I am literally brand new to this, so I don't know a lot about building a computer. However I have done some digging around and I was thinking about upgrading my GPU to the 1660 super, which would mean I need to upgrade my PSU to a 600+ W. However, I am not sure if my MB would be able to work with the new stuff, additionally, I do not know how important the CPU really is on games and whether or not I need to upgrade my CPU. Which then brings me to the other problem. If I am going to need to upgrade all these things, wouldn't it be better to just buy a completely new system?

Thank you in advance, I hope I am posting in the correct place, and if I missed any information I do apologize.

What ram, storage, and case do you have? As long as those are good, you wont have to replace them but I would recommend upgrading everything else.

I will attach a pcpartpicker list momentarily

I am far from an expert in this so please correct me if I’m wrong.

Case: NZXT Phantom 410

RAM: Corsair Vengeance LPX 16GB (x2 8GB)  DDR4

What's the easiest way to check my storage?

I know it's a 1Tb

So you dont need to upgrade either of those. What is your storage situation?

I  agree with Z  .

For me ,the MB is the most important part. The X 570 chipset is a must. Since the next generation, of AMD, the Zen 3 will be compatible, without any change with this chipset.

From what I have been told. ( could be wrong, lol )

That is, the 4000 series

This is an updated list that adds in an ssd. I had to change some parts to lower the cost. If you need to save more so it isn't over 1000 and if you need windows, I would recommend a 3600 instead of the 3700x.

Thank you for the very quick replies, this has given me a great idea of what I need.

Now with all that in mind. would it still benefit me from buying the parts, or should I buy a fully build system within my budget?

What I put is basically a fully new build. It just accounts for you reusing the ram, hard drive, and case of your current build because otherwise you would just be spending money to buy something that is basically the same.

I was wondering if you could explain to me a little how does CPU affect the performance on a gaming computer.

I don't know too much, but this is a good explanation of what everything does that I found on Quora. It is from Nathan Lim.

  • CPU: This handles game logic. It calculates how much damage is dealt, what happens when you walk in to the tall grass, how much income your city makes, etc. It co-ordinates with the BIOS (Basic Input/Output System) to compute and process your commands like mouse clicks and key presses.
  • GPU: This piece of hardware renders the actual image on screen. What is seen by you is computed by the GPU. All shading and ripple effects are calculated on the PhysX chip, which is usually integrated on to the graphics card, but older systems have a dedicated PhysX card. Only the looks are calculated on the GPU. All the actual logic happens on the CPU.
  • VRAM/Graphics memory: The graphics memory holds graphical information like the terrain around you. The bandwidth of this memory is awesome, several times better than system memory. This dedicated memory is only used by the GPU. When the memory is full and the GPU needs to store more, it sends it to the system RAM, which is slower. This is why running out of VRAM causes lag and other undesirable effects.
  • RAM/Memory: The system RAM holds data on the logic computed by the CPU. This is the other player’s location, the amount of money in your in-game account, how much ammunition you have left, etc. Large games with tons of carnage (Star Wars Battlefront) have huge RAM requirements to store all that data. If you run out of RAM, the CPU sends it to the hard disk (e.g. your Solid State Drive or your hard disk drive). The hard disk is massively slower than the memory cells in RAM sticks, so running out of RAM will drastically reduce performance.

That’s one of the worse X570 motherboards for a hefty CPU.

May I ask why that is? And would the MSI B450 Tomahawk be a better choice?

Oh, the review seemed good. Are there any around that price range you would recommend?

Yes, though I’d recommend you go for the  Mortar Max. It has an extra m.2 slot for future storage.

For B450 go for the Tomahawk/Mortar Max and for X570 the Tuf WiFi is a good choice.
