Fractal Design Focus G + Deepcool Assassin III?

PrimoTormento

Hello,

I'm having some difficulty choosing an appropriate cooling system for the case and hardware I've ordered.

The Fractal Design Focus G case has a max CPU cooler height of 165mm.

The Deepcool Assassin III is supposedly 165mm (I've been unable to confirm this, I've seen heights of 165mm and 171.5mm reported).

Does anyone here own both of these products, and can confirm that the Assassin III will fit into the Focus G?  This is one of the last parts I need to order.

I'd be facing the same issue with a Noctua D15.

The Dark Rock Pro 4 wouldn't give me enough RAM clearance.

I've *considered* going for a Noctua D15S, but it seems to not perform as well as the D15 or the Assassin III (or the Dark RockPro4, but the RAM clearance is only 40mm, and my RAM is 41mm).

I've ordered a Ryzen 9 3900x, Asus ROG STRIX X570-E, G.Skill Trident Z Neo RAM, a Sabrent 1TB Rocket Nvme PCIe 4.0 M.2 SSD (with heatsink), and I'll be using this MSI RTX 2060 I have in my current PC (for now).

I've read that the 3900x runs quite hot; so if I'm going the air cooling route, I want the best air cooler possible.  I'm not totally opposed to an AIO, but all of the research I've done has claimed that the high end air coolers are sufficient for the 3900x, and will only run a few degrees hotter.

I'd really just like to get the Assassin III, but I'm hesitant to order because I can't get confirmation that it'll fit into the Focus G.

Also, if anyone has advice on a better system for cooling this CPU, I'd appreciate hearing it.  This is the first PC I'm building from the ground up, I really don't know what I'm doing.

I will be purchasing case fans with a fan controller, so I'm confident that I'll have enough airflow; but I'm worried that the air cooler I want to use on the CPU will either be too big, or not be powerful enough for the 3900x.

Please help!

be quiet's official site has a picture of DRP4 with Trident Z RGB underneath, that's a 44mm stick. Even then the fans are no taller than the heatsink cover.

Hmm, interesting.  The Dark Rock Pro 4 is 3rd or 4th down my list for preferred coolers, I'd really prefer the Assassin III.  Now, I looked up the case + fan you have listed in your PC spec signature.  This is also a 165mm case, and a 165mm fan.  Did you have issues installing it?  Are you able to close your case without the fan touching the case?

I don't know why I can't find anyone who has the Fractal Design Focus G and the Deepcool Assassin III; I've checked several forums.  This is the only piece of hardware for which I've been unable to confirm compatibility.

I don't mind if there is *almost* no clearance, but I don't want the cooler physically touching the side of my case.

Yes I can, but no room for any sticks that are any taller (which is only 40mm)

Focus G is a budget case but Assassin III isnt a budget cooler? Just not something people would put together

I had to go for a case with 5.25" drives; I burn CD-R discs almost daily.  Plus, I love the idea of a 5.25" touchscreen fan controller for the other bay.  The Focus G was the only case that had all of the features I was looking for.  I would have gone for a better case, but there aren't many options for cases with multiple 5.25" bays; and the rest of this build is already so expensive- I wasn't looking to drop ~$400 on a case.

Now, you're telling me that your D15 only has 40mm of RAM clearance, that makes me *VERY* nervous; because Noctua claims that that cooler has something like a 65mm clearance.  Between my RAM and SSD + heatsink, I'm worried that no air coolers will be appropriate for this build.  I'd really like to avoid spending ~$400 on an AIO, if possible.

I suppose my best option is to order the Assassin III, hope it fits; and if it doesn't quite fit I'll have to eat the loss and go for the marginally lower quality Dark Rock Pro 4...

I ended up ordering a Noctua D15S.  It looks like it performs about as well as the D15 and Assassin III, and with 160mm height and 65mm RAM clearance I won't have to worry about anything.  I'm sure it'll do the trick for a 3900x at 4.1 or 4.2ghz, with adequate case airflow of course.

Thank you for your assistance.
