its only needed/semi necessary if you're doing exotic cooling and pushing SUPER high voltages, IE, LN2 cooling. Under no circumstances normal use will come close to exceeding the wattage that can easily be supplied by the single 8 pin. 

I'm getting this motherboard for my new work rig but I'm unsure of how to power it...

 

There's the usual 8-pin CPU socket at the top of the motherboard but there's also a 4-pin socket and I can't find a power supply with a 2x2-pin connector.

 

Any help would be great, thanks!

You only need to plug in the 8 pin.

It's a marketing gimmick... You don't need the extra 4-pin under all but the most extreme circumstances. I don't think it's even safe to be pushing the kind of voltages that would require the extra power connector using conventional cooling... So don't worry about it.
