"Best" Controller?

Pancake

I am looking for a controller for my PC. Long term quality is key, so it must either be cabled, or have user replaceable batteries

Any suggestions? My current thinking is to get an XBOX 360 controller

An Xbox One controller is my go to for gaming on the PC.

Uses normal Double A batteries, or can be used wired. I personally find it more comfortable than an Xbox 360 controller, which would be my next best option.

Personally I just ended up getting the Play&Charge kit, which is just a USB cable+rechargeable battery, but it's entirely possible to just use it wired or with AA-batteries.

There are a couple different sets of the Xbox One controller you can get. Some include a cable, some a wireless adapter, there is also the rechargeable battery, etc.

So do check what you need/want.

I'll add that I think the Xbox One controller also seems to play nice with Windows 10, and I've never had any compatibility with games or emulators, if that counts for anything.

I have been using a 360 controller, since the XBONE controller feels too fat in my hands for me. Really just personal preference though.

Or just break the bank and get an Xbox One Elite v2.  It is the best controller I have ever used.

Would get the USB dongle though, makes it even less painless and means you can use "designed for Xbox One" accessories with no hassle.

I bought a couple of the Steam Controllers when they were $5 each but I still reach for my Xbox One controller 99.9% of the time.  The Xbox one controller is about ideal for a PC controller, the only thing to watch out for is stick drift IMO.
